windows automatic updates

I just restored my computer to factory. I am runnin windows xp service pack 2, My computer is telling me that auto updates are not turned on and I made sure i turned them on when i went through the set up and i've gone and tried to turn them on manually and still nothing. i'm at a loss I cannot use the update site because of this and i need certain critical updates for some programs i want to run. how can i fix this

Do you get a error #, with a M$ link to resolve it ?? Let it run for a while to get the Error No.
