Windows Explorer Details won't stay...

Is there some way to make the "Details" I select in Win Explorer stay fixed in the right pane? After "Name" in the right pane, my preference is "Size," "Folder Path," and "Type." The default details there are often useless to me, like "Artist," "Album," and "Rating."

If I understand you correctly up in the right corner you can select a drop down that changes the views from detail to thumbnails and everything in between. Check my screenshot and let me know if that helps.

Windows Explorer menu preferences won't stay...

I don't experience any problem bringing up the "Details" view in the right pane of Win Explorer. Allow me to share the steps that lead to what I regard as a problem:

    1. Right-click on Start -> Explore.
    2. Navigate to and click on "Local Disk (C:).
    3. Right-click on "Name" in the right upper menu -> uncheck "Artists," "Album," etc.
    4. Right-click on "Name" again in right pane.
    5. Select "More" -> select "Size," "Folder Path," "Type" and "Date Modified" -> OK.
    6. Reboot.

All of the items you selected in the right pane of Win Explorer will be lost. Is there some way or some app available that will let you keep your preferences?

Caliban I don't need no steenkin' title!

    Greetings, Djard.

Try this: after your step #5 (while still in Windows Explorer) click Organize > Folder and search options > View > Apply to folders > Ok. See if the details stay put after a reboot.

Caliban's tip seems to have done the trick. I ran a search for and did not lose the settings. Thanks though.

I was just about to post the same question as the OP.

Does anyone know how to do this on Windows 2000 and/or XP? This has annoyed me for years! It changes back as soon as I leave a folder.

In Windows Explorer, Tools > Folder Options > View tab. Click Apply to All Folders

It's one of those little things you assume everyone knows, when in fact a lot don't. Just had one myself - Ctrl-Alt-F12 - which forces Windows to remember the position and size of the active window in Restore Down mode. I was assured EVERYONE knows that - but I didn't - though like you I had been looking for a solution to the problem for years. :-o

Well, I spoke too soon. Some genius at Microsoft decided that it's mandatory to have Explorer configured to list Artist, Album, Genre, Ratring, etc. in the right panel. I thought the Tools -> Folder Options -> View -> Apply to Folders steps would stick. But they don't.

Surely someone has figured a way to get around Microsoft's socialistic approach to developing software.

Amazingly, a Google search for the solution yields nothing. So I guess folks don't mind having to reconfigure Explorer every time they need to view a file's Size, Folder Path, and Date Modified. I'm hoping there is someone smart enough to get around this problem.

You could always try one of the Explorer replacements: Free Commander, NexusFile, xplorer², etc. Don't know if they'll do what you want, but you should check them out.

Thanks, I forgot that I have Total Commander already installed.
