About a week ago I've noticed I haven't had any recent Window Updates. So I went in and tried to manually check for updates. I get the message "WIndow Updates cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running." I also tried to check for updates for Window Defender, but got the error 0x800106ba

I'm running Win Vista 64-bit, SP2. Using IE 9. Laptop

I've searched on MS' website and tried all of their recommendations: Change dependencies, clean reboot, MS Fix it and Defender Fix IT. Also turned updates off, then on again. Nothing has worked.

Someone on another forum suggested running a Diag report and to post. So I'll post it here hoping someone can help.

    Thanks in advance.

Open the Run box (Windows key + R) and enter services.msc, press OK.
See if the following services are either running or can be started:

[IMG] Please download Farbar Service Scanner and run it on the computer with the issue.
    • Make sure all the options are checked
    • Press Scan.
    • It will create a log (FSS.txt) in the same directory the tool was run.
    • Please attach FSS.txt to your next message. (How to attach)

Try checking the Hard Drive for bad sectors. Right click on the Command Prompt and select 'run as administrator', then type or paste:
    chkdsk /r c:
Press Enter and confirm that you want to run it at the next boot.

If there are no bad sectors, then from an admin Command Prompt run:
    sfc /scannow
then post a new Diagnostic report.

Thanks for the info. Let me finish up things with thisisu, and see how things go. Then I'll move forward with your instructions.

    Thank you.

I ran chkdk, but it ran during the middle of the night. when I woke up, window was booted up. So not sure if there were any errors.

I ran sfc/scannow. For some reason I can't attach the log due to permissions?
There were reported errors that it couldn't fix.

I'm trying to figure out how to allow the file to be attached.
