    Hi guys,
I'm after a bit of technical support,
I've been cleaning a colleagues computer up for them (running slow) it had a couple of malware issues and a virus all now clear and running upto speed. However i noticed a problem with windows update. whenever I reset or shut down the computer there was always and update to install!! at 1st I thought it was just that it hadn't been updated in a while but now i realise its the same update EVERY time. I click on the update icon in the corner it says 1 critical updates require installation I select it and install it ( It goes green and says installed ) when i go to shut down the little yellow shield is there saying shut down and install updates this I do and it says installing 1 of 1 and then shuts down. Restart the computer and after a breif time the update icon pops up with exactly the same update!!! (Microsoft SQL Server2005 Express Edition Service Pack 4 KB2463332) looking a bit further into it i realised that it's only running service pack 1, no problem i thought, so i downloaded service pack 2 from microsoft and manually tried to install it but i get an error message saying it cannont be installed (an unknow error occured 0x8004100a ) i've scoured microsoft's site for info but it's less than revealing and the fact that it is now a defunct operating system doesn't seem to be much help.

Can anyone shed any light on any of the above?

The computer is running Microsoft windows vista Home premium (service pack 1)

    Thank you in advance

Yup, I have the similar issue, tried installing sp2 4 times! using an admin account.. from the MS update site and also tried downloading it to the machine and installing.. 1.5 hours install and about .5 hour to roll back..hmmpff h8 vista already..using it on my old mans machine for the first time recently...have to say glad I didnt pay for this crap O.S.

Hope you find a solution..if I find one I will update you.

Thank you very much for the "heads-up" Plodr :)

I have quickly read the 1st file & will read the other later on with greater attention to detail.

    Also large hmmpf to MS..
So much for the supposed default support of 7 years for an MS operating system, I was told this by another geek some time ago, during the days of XP this was the default support time.

MS ended support for Windows Vista SP1 on July 12, 2011. In other words, Vista users need to install SP2 for continued support. Similarly, Windows XP users need SP3 for continued support.

    This might help: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/952577/

    hi plodr,

yeah i read the articles, the automatic update wouldn't even show it so i manually downloaded from microsoft as advised but when i try to install i get the error message :( i've installed the tool as well (took about an hour to install) i thought that might solve the problem so tried again to install sp2 and you've guessed it same problem again!! I'm a bit stumped now I can't contact Microsoft because it's not SP2 but I can't get SP2 installed any further thoughts??
    Thanks in advance

Have you thought about formatting the hard drive and reinstalling Vista from the recovery partition? I imagine you'd like to avoid since any programs installed by your colleague would have to be reinstalled and all his/her personal files would have to be backed up before the procedure, but it would be an approach that's probably much more likely to result in a successful installation of SP2.
