windows xp admin icon gone

hi a friend of mines computer crashed. he restarted it and every thing boots up fine but when the screen that has the administrator icon on it dosnt have the icon any more. now he cant get into windows
i think it is windows xp sp2 im not sure though.

Administrator icon? Do you mean the login screen? screenshots possible?

 

yes the login screen. sorry i didnt know the name. he doesn't have a password
ive tried to get in threw safe mode, last known conf. ect.
i installed the same version of windows on his other hard drive and it loaded just fine but he doesnt have driver discs for all his crap is there a way to get around that stupid login?

 

push CTRL+ALT+DEL twice, and then you can type in the username / password.

Have you tried Safe Mode? (press F8 repeatedly after starting the computer) What happens in safe mode? Do you get any users on the login screen?

Administrator doesn't usually show unless you start in safe mode.

 

What *do* you see on the screen? Most likely your friend has changed the way a user logs on.

Try this:

Press the following keys at the same time
CTRL
ALT
DEL

If this presents you with a text box, in the user name box type:
Administrator

In the password box, leave it blank and pressy okay.

If it says incorrect password then somenoe has set a password to the administrator account. You'll need to find a password reset utility.
