My pc at home works fine, not problems but has recently in the system tray instead of showing a yellow shield when windows has updates available instead has a red shield.

It says that the automatic updates have been turned off and that I should turn them on again, but when I check it shows that there are already on.

An IT bod at work wasn't too sure and said I should turn them off, then reboot, turn them back on and see if that works.

    It didn't

So can anyone out there in forum land help me

    Cheers thephoenix572

Start > Settings > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services.

Under Automatic Update, what is the Startup type set at?

    It should be on automatic.

I've just checked and there is no setting for automatic updates.

    What do I do?

    "To turn on Automatic Updates:

    1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
    2. Depending on which Control Panel view you use, Classic or Category, do one of the following:
    * Click System, and then click the Automatic Updates tab.
    * Click Performance and Maintenance, click System, and then click the Automatic Updates tab.
    3. Click the option that you want. Make sure Automatic Updates is not turned off."

Don't know whether you use XP Home or Pro. It works for the Home version.

    Hope this helps.

I don't get any errors when using those sites. My pc runs smoothly but the red shield is annoying. I've done a full spyware and virus check and nothing unusual pops up

Unfortunately that didn't work and it turns out I had a virus on my pc, cost me £70 to have it removed but had extra ram installed also and now pc runs even smoother than before.

The red shield was still there when I got it back but I found the fix

    It was

    Run then type

    regsvr32 wuaueng.dll

Press enter and that corrects the problem
