    Hi

I have been having internet/malware, etc. problems. I have Windows XP Media Center Edition. I found Windows XP Cleaning Procedure posted by Chaslang and followed those steps. It says to post the logs for checking. Then I can do toggle system restore. Before I ran all of the suggested programs I tried doing a system restore, but couldn't because when it tried to restart i would get a blue screen stating fatal system error and that the windows logon system process system failed with a status of 0x00000000 (0x00000000 0x00000000). ..or something like that..so the system restore wouldn't work since it wouldn't shut down properly.

I also searched in google and when i clicked on links it would take me to a different site than the link i clicked on.

After running the suggested programs by chaslang, I believe it will restart properly now, so I'm inclined to pick a system restore point. But it tells me to toggle system restore...will this delete all my restore points? even good ones/uninfected?

I also have Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security... and now that i have run all of the spyware/malware, etc programs indicated by chaslang, google links seem to work properly and i believe it will restart properly..but i still have received a notification by Trend Micro saying that a trojan or some malware has been detected. So I feel like after running all those, the Mal Vundo or virtumonde? or something is still in my pc somewhere...?

I will also attach my logs from running those programs for checking.

I would appreciate any help I can receive, so I can get my pc to a trusted state of operation again.

    Thanks!

Please use add/remove programs to uninstall:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
    Viewpoint Media Player

Run this: Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

I strongly advise you to cleanup your Desktop. Remove everything but links to run programs. Do not download and save programs here and definitely do not use it for long term storage. You need to keep ComboFix.exe here for now as we need it, but we will be removing it when we are finished with your cleanup. A cluttered Desktop is malware's playground and it can also cause performance degradation especially when you start saving large files here like you are doing.

Most of your problems started on Nov. 15th.:

Now download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.

    * Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    * Do not change any check box options!!
    * Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:

    * Now click the Execute button.
    * Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    * Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    * Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    * A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

    Now download and install:
    Java Runtime 6

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Avenger.

Ok. Thanks TimW. I have done as instructed (logs attached). What next?

Also, is there anything else/extra I need to/can do to ensure proper cleanup of my system? How does everything look?

(I have cleaned up my desktop. There are some odd/transparent-looking files on my desktop including: word docs that start with ~$, a .tmp, and a Thumbs.db. Also, randomly through folders and areas of my pc there are these transparent files -- are they supposed to be or typically hidden? some corresponding ~$ doc files i have deleted or moved to a folder but the ~$ doc file still remains. Are these files ok to delete?)

I really appreciate your advice/instruction. Thanks so much for helping me.

Do not delete anything unless we tell you to. Some of those are hidden files that we unhide with the scans. They will go away shortly.

Your logs are clean .......If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommed you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They are useful as backup scanners. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

      • Delete the C:\combofix folder from combofix (if it exists)

    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    7. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Thank You so much TimW! Again I have done as instructed (toggle system restore) and will work through that link...including downloading and running CCleaner and then downloading and running one of the suggested hard drive defrags. (After running the CCleaner and defrag software, should I keep these programs or delete them?)

Also, I still have on my desktop: SAS, Ad-Aware, spybot, malwarebytes, mb-setup, mbam-log, SAS log, avenger zip folder, and a jre=6ull-windows-i586-p icon (java i guess?). I have two icons on my desktop for SAS too?.. one that looks like a short-cut with a picture of a spy-man crossed out and another one that says SUPERAntiSpyare with picture of a computer.

What of the above is ok to delete? What should I keep? and should I occasionally run some--how frequently?

Any other suggestions, tips, advice? Otherwise I guess I should be done bothering you with this small stuff.

    Again, thank you.

Yes you should keep CCleaner and a defrag program. You can delete:
mb-setup, mbam-log, SAS log, avenger zip folder, and jre=6ull-windows-i586-p icon as well as delete the two SAS icons.

I can not tell you how often to run SAS or MBAM as that would be conditional to your surfing habits. You may wish to run it when you suspect a problem or on a regular basis.

You are most welcome....safe surfing. :)

Ok...I'm back. Not sure if this should be in a different thread or not..but I haven't run CCleaner yet, but I did start run msconfig and was looking at some startup items.. there were a couple of extra icons at the bottom right of my toolbar that i didn't think needed to be starting up. Everything I have been reading throughout the support forums say to startup in Normal Start mode..and i noticed that Selective Startup was checked when i ran msconfig..even after I followed all of the steps for Windows XP cleaning procedure by Chaslang. I checked Normal Startup mode and restarted my pc and when my desktop came up, some kind of Dell assistant popped asking about Microsoft office like i had never used it before, but i've never seen that assistant before i don't think even since i got the computer when it was brand new...now also there are way more icons in the bottom right of the desktop toolbar that started up with my pc that weren't there before.

should I switch back to Selective Startup or what else can I do to fix startup and continue to clean out and clean up my computer. when should i uninstall programs with add/remove - in normal startup or selective or does it matter? (i think i uninstalled programs before i switched over to normal startup)

can i trouble you for continued help?

    thanks

Leave your system in normal start up mode. Then use one of these: Startup Manager

    Startup_CPL

Post in the software section for help with determining what to stop from loading.
