I have been having more and more problems with my computer lately, so I decided to track them down. I think I am in over my head... at first the computer would load up and get to the point where it loads up the icons then I will hear the hard drive shut down and fire back up and click and then the blue screen of death. sometimes it would say driver not less or equal. I deleted all temp files and started cleaning out all of my programs especially ones I have downloaded recently. Anything I could replace came off including service pack 2. once i uninstalled sp2 the computer now behaves differently... here's where I am at... If I restart or turn on my computer it loads up windows xp pro gets to the welcome screen, goes black like it's going to put up the Icons and then I get this error: The application or DLL C:\windows\system32\UxTheme.dll is not a valid windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette. " No more blue screen of death No more hard drive shutting down before windows loads up but now no Icons either... So I press control alt delete and up pops 2 errors about bad image uxtheme.dll then task manager pops up wich will let me run new tasks from the file menu...so I browse for internet explorer and went online and found out that I have a trojan called java.byteverify!exploit and even how to get rid of it, but it requires me to go through the control panel and I can't because I have no Icons. also windows update will not take so I can't reinstall sp2 it keeps saying it is not installed even though i installed it.... Help ?!?!?!? I want my Icons back! and I really feel dumb for uninstalling sp2 now.

    Hi and welcome to MajorGeeks.

I think UxTheme.dll is the skin XP uses, and somehow must have become corrupt. (probably from spyware or virus)

Do you have a proper Windows CD?

If so, try a Repair. If unsure or no, post back.

If you only have a Recovery CD, read the help file and see if it has the function.

here is a link for the network installation file for SP2. It is a huge file
I don't think it will help, but it is worth a try. I'm not currently on an xp system so I can't help you find an alternative way to get to control panels. Like Insomniac said, everything that mentions uxtheme.dll refers to desktop themes so try disabling desktop themes. You are going to have to remove tthe virus on your comp to fix your problems. I bet your computer was infected with virus when you tried to update to SP2 and it messed up the install. You can also use your XP cd to run a repair if possible.
