Something from today's list to exercise the mind.

PC with Win XP PRO. Connected to Netgear DSL modem/router by ethernet.

The router home page readily accessible in internet explorer shows good connection to supplier (pipex).

All IE and Pipex settings correct. Only Windows firewall set (correctly)

However no program can access the internet, ffox, IE, AVG update, msoft update etc.
Even the router can't (apparantly) be sent to the netgear home page with the test button.

Answers after my dinner for those who may meet this problem.

Sounds like maybe a DNS issue.
You can see the router's web interface? but that is far as you get?
Can you ping 66.102.9.104? or open it in your browser?

Both Winsock and TCP/IP reset had no effect.

Perhaps the NIC has failed. I was working on a PC last week that went online just fine; I shut it down for the nite, unplugged the power cord, and when I powered it up the next day, it wouldn't go online. Everything said it should go online, but it just wouldn't. I pulled the NIC, moved it to different PCI slots, and still no internet. So, I powered down, put in another NIC (exact same make and model) and it works perfectly now..... just a thought.....

    Is this a test?

Does the modem register an IP from the WAN side?

    No test just
    .

Customer had Yahoo and Google toolbars installed.

    So what you might say?

Well I disabled the 3 popup blockers in Google, Yahoo and IE and away she went, sweet as a nut.

No idea why this stopped other programs accessing the net or why it all worked, but it is an interesting addition to Kestrels Iframe question.

    I hate toolbars.

Is there a reset button on the router? If not then maybe un-plug it and let it load back up.
Not sure if it is relevant but I had this problem once with a Belkin router once. Everything checked out fine except connecting to web pages. The only thing that solved it was to un-plug it from power and plug it back in.

The moral of this one is that I get a steady stream of callouts

"my pc suddenly stopped connecting to the internet"

When I look the user has just installed or updated "......." toolbar.

I uninstall the toolbar and internet access resumes.

When you load a toolbar you often also load a whole raft of other 'utilities' as well without realizing.
