    Hi,
My computer has been slow to boot. So I thought I would tweak some things to speed things up. I ran antivirus and malware scans beforehand and they came out clean. I've been using Microsoft Security Essentials, Microsoft firewall, and paid version of MalwareBytes. I decided to change firewall and anitvirus to Comodo. I was following the guides in the forum Guides and Frequently asked Questions. So I must have done something along the way.

I started checking programs to make sure everything was working and found that when I opened iTunes it gave me a message that the registry settings for burning CDs is missing and to reinstall iTunes. As I was following Apples directions for doing this I started to notice that some of the programs in the Add/Remove list had 0 bytes of info which didn't seem right. I finished uninstalling/reinstalling iTunes but got the same message and my iPod is not recognized for sync.

On startup I get a New Hardware Found message but there is no new hardware that I have added.

Then programs became unresponsive. Sometimes several clicks would do it, but it would take a painfully long time to actually open. Also, antivirus fails to startup with Windows. I can get it running but only after several tries and a long wait. I tried running in Safe Mode to see if that would solve some of the issues. It did not.

So I've used the Malware Removal Guide to scan things. It looks like I have picked up something undesirable. I'll attach the logs and we can go from there.

    Thanks,
    Chris

What exactly did you do besides scanning for infections? Had you run perfomance tweaking tools and or registry cleaners of any kind? ( I noticed Max Registry Cleaner in your logs ). If so, this could be the cause of your problems. I do see some junkware but the problems you are listing are probably not due to the junkware. You also may have too much running? I would not have Malwarebytes and Advanced System Care installed and running with Comodo. I suggest you uninstall them.

You also appear to have multiple backup programs ( Carbonite and Acronis ) which both have services running.

I also see the below in your uninstall programs list but you have Comodo for a firewall now:
    ZoneAlarm Firewall
    ZoneAlarm Security

    Now let's cleanup the junkware.

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win 7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {4A368E80-174F-4872-96B5-0B27DDD11DB2} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {BA0C978D-D909-49B6-AFE2-8BDE245DC7E6} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: Browser Address Error Redirector - {CA6319C0-31B7-401E-A518-A07C3DB8F777} - (no file)
    O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-21-2569970196-4136388257-3315468806-1011\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background (User 'Caleb')
    O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-21-2569970196-4136388257-3315468806-1011\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTTask.exe" -atboottime (User 'Caleb')
    O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-21-2569970196-4136388257-3315468806-500\..\RunOnce: [SpybotDeletingB4834] command /c del "C:\Program Files\Max Registry Cleaner\Log\ScanLog.txt" (User 'Administrator')
    O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-21-2569970196-4136388257-3315468806-500\..\RunOnce: [SpybotDeletingD1396] cmd /c del "C:\Program Files\Max Registry Cleaner\setting\CurrentSettings.ini" (User 'Administrator')

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

Please download OTM by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.
    • Run OTM.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, Win7 or Win8, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).
    • Copy the lines from the below codebox to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C
(or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy): Do not include the word Code: which is just a title line of
      the code box
    Code:
    :Processes
    explorer.exe

    :Files
    C:\Documents and Settings\Trouble\Application Data\DSite
    C:\Program Files\Max Registry Cleaner
    C:\WINDOWS\Tasks\At1.job
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp\*.*
    C:\Documents and Settings\Trouble\Local Settings\temp\*.*

    :Reg
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes]
    "DefaultScope"="{0633EE93-D776-472f-A0FF-E1416B8B2E3A}"
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes\{0633EE93-D776-472f-A0FF-E1416B8B2E3A}]
    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes\{148F454B-E6C7-4C79-8921-EEF8306F7038}]
    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes\{afdbddaa-5d3f-42ee-b79c-185a7020515b}]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{BA0C978D-D909-49B6-AFE2-8BDE245DC7E6}]
    :Commands
    [purity]
    [EmptyTemp]
    [start explorer]
    [Reboot]
    • Return to OTM, right click in the Paste List of Files/Folders to Move window (under the yellow bar
      ) and choose Paste.
    • Now click the large [IMG] button.
    • If OTM asks to reboot your computer, allow it to do so. The report should appear in Notepad after the reboot.
    • Close OTM.
Now navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder ( assuming your Windows drive is C). This is where your log will be
saved in the form of Date and Time mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log. Just look for the most recent .log file. Attach
this log file to your next message.

Now please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
    • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
    • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista or Seven, right-mouse click it and select Run as Administrator.
    • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
    • Note: That JRT may reset your home page to a google default so you will need to restore your home page setting if this happens.
    • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
    • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
    • Attach JRT.txt to your next message.
Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, Win7 or Win8, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles log
    • the JRT.TXTlog
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

When tweaking I ran CCleaner and the registry cleaner included with CCleaner. Then antivirus scan, Malware Bytes scan, and a disk defrag. After that I ran tweaking.com's Windows repair.

The whole system was working better so I went in search of new and better things. That is when I had my download frenzy and started changing things like taking Windows firewall and Microsoft Security Essentials off and replacing with Comodo.

I have removed Advanced System Care and Comodo. I have kept Malware Bytes and returned to Microsoft Security Essentials and Windows Firewall. It was working just fine.

As for Zone Alarm, I uninstalled that over a year ago when I started using Windows Firewall. I thought it was gone. The two backup programs came about because I thought I would be diligent with backups with Acronis, later realized not the case and went to Carbonite. Is Acronis running in the background?

I followed your clean up steps. The only thing I had trouble with was OTM. It would just freeze. So I restarted in Safe Mode and it ran just fine.

Computer is running much better. Still have trouble with iTunes and missing registry files. The other thing that happens is Windows Security Center tells me that my antivirus is off when I go to Microsoft Security Essentials the real time protection is on.

Logs are attached. Thanks for your help.

We do not recommend registry cleaning. Frequently it can cause more harm then good. Even unexpected behaviours like you have mentioned.

The below should remove the rest of it.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

Not in the background. It is is just running right there in plain sight. Uninstall it if you do not use it. You should not have two installed especially if you only use one.

Uninstall, reboot, reinstall. If that does not help, please post in the Software Forum for all non-malware related topics.

Not sure yet why this is but it could also be due to all the security programs having been installed/uninstalled and registry cleaning. Also it could just be a bug with MSE. I believe I have read about this in the past.

    Your logs are clean.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware.
    2. Renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it in step 4 of the READ & RUN ME.
    3. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis. If you don't see it or it will not uninstall, don't worry about it. Just move on to the next step.
    4. If running Vista, Win 7 or Win 8, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Now goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click ( if running Vista, Win7, or Win 8 Right Click and Run As Administrator ) on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    6. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others) and running MGclean.bat did not remove them, you can delete these files now.
    7. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    8. If you are running Win 8, Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below to flush restore points:
      • Refer to the instructions for your WIndows version in this link: Disable And Enable System Restore
      • What we want you to do is to first disable System Restore to flush restore points some of which could be infected.
      • Then we want you to Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

The fixme.reg was successful and I did receive the success message.

    I uninstalled Acronis.

I uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes. The good news is that it recognizes my iPod now. Still gives me registry missing error. Will post in Software forum.

Things are running much smoother now and I followed the clean up steps.

Thanks very much for your help!
