My wife and I have Windoze XP installed and use a 56Kb dial-up line.

The Windos auto up-date became so annoying (it seemed like every day it was downloading and/or installing the latest up-date) that we finally turned it off (My God, how often do you need to up-date a 3-5 year old O/S). rolleyes

Now, of course, we are being annoyed by Windoze telling us that our system is unprotected and to click on the bubble to fix this problem.

How can I turn this warning gizmo off?

I have Tweak UI for Windows but could not find how I could use it to get rid of that warning pop-up.

Ooooh, I hate that one too!

    Try this:

    1. Right-click 'My Computer'
    2. Select 'Manage'
    3. On the 'Computer Management' window, expand 'Services and Applications'
    4. Select 'Services'
    5. Find 'Security Center' in the right-hand pane
    6. Right click 'Security Center' and select 'Properties'
    7. On the 'Security Center Properties' dialog, change the 'Startup Type' to disabled.
    8. Press the 'Stop' button.
    9. Apply your settings.

No more security center! Note that you will not get warnings when your firewall is inactive, or when your antivirus is out-of-date.

    Yes I will. :)

I have AVG and Kerio. They let me know.

    Thanks for your help.

I could go forever without getting any more warnings from Windoze.

    Another (related) subject.

I crank up I.E. occassionally when FireFox gets it shorts in a twist and although I have fixed the home page setting (to my ISP), I.E. still seems to insist on going to some Microsoft site to tell me about something (updates?) when it first comes up.

I have to hit stop and erase the link address it's rushing towards and give it the addy where I really want to go.

Is there any way to tell I.E. to 'sit down and shut up' and just do what's told?

And of course, do not come here and start complaining when the system gets exploited. Linux gets more updates then Windows. For the price of DSL now, can't you go that route, instead of staying with Dial-up?

I average 50-150mb of updates a week with Linux.

DSL is not available in my area. Nor is Wi-Fi and the cable service is crap but it's all I can use to get TV.

The 'problem' I have with most Microsoft offerings is that they provide features that I don't need (or want) which creates security holes and/or the need to do up-dates.

Mozilla and Linux are hard on the track to do the same.

I wish Microslop would offer a plain vanilla, no frills, no user helpful features bullet-proof O/S and Firefox/Thunderbird would do the same with a browser/e-mail client.

It took me a long time last year to find a cell phone that would just send/receive calls (no voice mail, no Internet connection, text messages, photos, music, blah, blah, blah).

    End of rant. :)

You are speaking beyond your experience, in regards to Linux. Some distros only update security fixes.

I run a bleeding edge distro, which isn't even in the same vein. I do a system wide upgrade daily.

As for Windows, you should only need the security updates. I am curious which updates MS is providing that is ceating security holes for you?
