First, this is a wonderful forum, thanks for all you do.

I have the problem referenced by chaslang on 3-27-06 where Spy Sweeper is reporting a trojan winlogonhook - which appears everytime I run Spy Sweeper and it won't remove. I definately have some sort of malware on my computer, as these spyware pop-up ads appear, my IE browser does not function properly, when I click on my computer it takes forever to open, etc. All this started when I got SpywareQuake on my system. I followed those procedure to remove, and it seemed to solve that problem. But I still have some "lingering" items - suck as htose mentioned above and this "winlogonhook"

I have followed the procedures outlined on the 3-27-06 post by chaslang re: winlogonhook. Attached is the Spy Sweeper report with the explorer.exe shut off, the Spy Sweeper report with the explorer.exe restored, the Edwino report. Below is a HiJack This log.

In addition, but not attached (because it was not asked for), I have run Spybot, CCleaner, Ad-aware, Windows Defender, and Bitdefender.

I am running Windows XP, Service Pack 2.

    Thanks again for your help.

Edit: Removed inline HJT log, for Run me first guide to be actioned

Please re-run the guide steps for Hijackthis scans and logs as you have installed and run Hijackthis from the exact location we insist you don't for a more accurate log

    C:\DOCUME~1\COMPAQ~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\ARC662\HijackThis.exe

also it run from an archive and with non-essential applications running in the background, ie. Internet Explorer, Weatherbug, MSN Messenger.....

    Please re-run this
    Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThis

Plus more importantly if you didnt follow our 1st steps guide below then please do so as referencing another post which may seem similar may not help your case and many malware infections have different removal steps, as you maybe infected mith not just this one but others.

    - Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support

Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.

After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:

    Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThis

When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too (these scans are covered in steps 6 & 7 of the READ & RUN ME sticky)
    • Bitdefender
    • Panda Scan
    • HijackThis

Thanks for the feedback. I have followed your directions and attached the bitdefender, panda and hijack this log.

Looks like Panda found that virtumoude virus - which I thought I had fixed as well (following the directions here). Is that and the winlogonhook interrelated or are they seperate issues?

I ram SpySweeper again and it did find winlogonhook again - after going through all the procedures outlined on your post.

You ignored the directions in step 7 of the READ ME and you again ignore it when Halo requested that you install HijackThis properly. You still have it here:

    C:\DOCUME~1\COMPAQ~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\ARC662\HijackThis.exe

You MUST EXTRACT it from the ZIP file as requested. Please install it as requested in the READ ME and then attach a new HJT log. If you leave it where it is located or have anything else saved there, they will ALL be deleted while running the cleaning procedures we need to give. Temp folders mean just what they say.....they are temporary which means anything in them is expendible.

Is your copy or Spy Sweeper a paid or free version?

I apologize for the bad hijack this log. Attached is a log that should be correct.

I am using the free version of Spy Sweeper.

In addition, incase they are related, I got the following from my AVG today:

    Trojan Horse Generic.WYM C:\Windows\system32\winvcw32.dll
    Trojan horse downloader Zlob.BGE C:\System Volume Information\_restore{2466A83D-1B81-456E-9766-38C2B7E48210}\RP18\A0003105.exe

Okay so then you should uninstall Spy Sweeper beacuse the free version will not fix anything (unless you have the older free version - but it will only work for 15 days). You have Windows Defender which is free so you do not need Spy Sweeper (unless you are going to buy it).

You seem to have missed step 3 of the READ ME. I see AVG and Symantec installed. You must only use one antivirus application. Uninstall one.

Did you install WeatherBug and do you need it? It is consider mild malware by many. It's up to you what you want to do with it.

Now copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.

Make sure viewing of hidden files is enabled (per the tutorial).

Please run HijackThis and click on the Open the Misc Tools Section button on the open page. Then select Open process manager on the left-hand side. Look for the following process (or processes) and one at a time kill them by selecting it and then click Kill process. Then click yes.
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\c8f7acbd.exe

After killing all the above processes, click Back.
Then please click Scan and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar,LinksFolderName =
    R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WildTangent CDA] "C:\Program Files\WildTangent\Apps\CDA\GameDrvr.exe" /startup "C:\Program Files\WildTangent\Apps\CDA\cdaEngine0500.dll"
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [c8f7acbd.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\c8f7acbd.exe

    O20 - Winlogon Notify: winvcw32 - winvcw32.dll (file missing)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.
Boot into safe mode and use Windows Explorer to delete:

    C:\Program Files\WildTangent <--- the whole folder
C:\Documents and Settings\Compaq_Owner\Local Settings\Temp <--- delete all files & subfolders in this Temp folder. Windows will block deletion of a couple from the current date. This is normal
    C:\Documents and Settings\Compaq_Owner\Local Settings\Application Data\c8f7acbd.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\winvcw32.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\c8f7acbd.exe

If you get an error when deleting a file. Right click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. If it is, uncheck it and try again. Other wise open Task Manager and kill the process if running then delete the file.

Now if running Win XP goto c:\windows\Prefetch and delete all files in this folder.
Now run Ccleaner (installed while running the READ ME FIRST).

Now we need to Reset Web Settings:
    1. If you have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, goto step 2. If not, skip to step 3.
    2. Now right click on your desktop Internet Explorer icon and select Properties. Then click the Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK. Then skip step 3.
    3. If you do not have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, click Start, Control Panel (for some systems it may be Start, Settings, Control Panel), Internet Options, Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK.
Now reboot in normal mode and post a new HJT log.

Make sure you tell me how things are working now.

Reminder Note: Once we have determined you are malware free you will need to disable System Restore, reboot, and re-enable system restore per step 1 of the READ & RUN ME. This only applies to if using WinXP or WinMe.

    Hello:

The new Hijack this file is attached. Thanks for your help. It has seemed to resolve all problems except I still have the following issues:

    1. The "My Computer" folder takes forever to open (about 1 minute).
    2. When I type a web address in the address bar and hit enter (or Go) nothing happens. If I click on hyperlinks these work.

Both those issues started when I got this virus.

It does not sound like malware but let's check one more thing.

Run the below procedure and attach the runkeys.txt log.

    Hi:

I have attached the requested file. Thanks for your help. Just a couple more notes:

Again, when I open My Computer it takes about 2 minutes for the folder to open (I have the flashlight thing going); when I type in a url into IE it takes about 2 minutes for it to go to that page; when I use Mozilla and type in a url it goes right away to that page FYI.

    Chaslang is on vacation.

It is really important that you complete the last set of instructions in a timely manner.

Since it has been awhile; please post a fresh HijackThis log.
