I'm a newbie, and have never installed cards or components to a PC. Any tips would be appreciated.

I also have some specific questions:
    1. The fx5500 instructions say to uninstall the current onboard graphics before installing the card. I have Intel Extreme graphics currently. I'm concerned that if I uninstall the drivers, I won't be able to "see" anything when I reboot before the card drivers are installed, and I'm concerned I won't be able to re-install the Intel drivers if necessary because I don't have the original system disc.

    2. The fx550 instructions also say to cancel out of the "New Hardware detected" install wizard. Is this a good idea to just use their disc, or should I use the wizard?

    3. For the PVR150, what is the best way to configure it with my TV/DVD etc. My TV is old and only has the cable and component inputs (no Svideo.) I was thinking I could run cable (no cable box) into the dvd => dvd into the PVR150 with SVideo => PVR150 into the TV with the component connection. If this won't work or produces poor quality, I have a LCD monitor I can use with the VGA connection on the fx5500.

I'm not looking for anything spectacular, since I'll be upgrading in the near future, and I don't want to invest in additional software.

    FYI, I'm using a Dell Dimension 2400, Pentium4.

    Thanks in advance.

Well I can tell you now that un-installing the onboard graphics drivers will not prevent you from "seeing" anything. Just un-install the drivers, shut down the computar and fit the Graphics card card. Boot up your computer, windows should recognise your new hardware straight away however its still best to put any installation cds that came with the graphics card in aswell. Hope I've been some help.

Thanks for the reply Bobo. Kids these days! I'm preparing to forge ahead, so I'll let you know how it turns out. My biggest concern is being able to undo everything if I get catastrophic results. As I mentioned, I don't have the original cd. The solution I came up with is to save all the driver files, save a copy of the registry, and create a system restore point. If all else fails, I can just go back to where I am currently. Wish me luck.

you might have to go into the bios to disable the onboard graphics also.

After installing both cards, and having the whole thing setup and running in less than an hour, I now feel foolish for having posted this. I can't believe how easy it was. Now I've been initiated into the world of computer hardware upgrades!

There's nothing foolish about asking or being cautious.

What's foolish is installing it without being sure of the procedure.
