WinXP - strange message when loading

WinXP Home SP3 - this PC seems to be running OK on the whole, but there is a little error after typing in the login password. I couldn't get a screen shot of it, but I found a 'replica' in the Event Viewer that has the same wording:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Userenv
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1505
Date: 1/9/2010
Time: 10:26:18 AM
User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
Computer: ALEXXAXPS

Description:
Windows cannot load the user's profile but has logged you on with the default profile for the system.

DETAIL - The system has attempted to load or restore a file into the registry, but the specified file
is not in a registry file format.

And there's another one that is VERY similar, but a bit different:

Description:
Windows was unable to load the registry. This is often caused by insufficient
memory or insufficient security rights.

but the specified file is not in a registry file format. for
C:\Documents and Settings\TEMP\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows\\UsrClass.dat

There's also an error in the Event Viewer that says something about not being able to load the profile, so a default profile was loaded (???)

The first 2 messsages are in the "System" section, the 3rd one is in the "Applications" section....

Any input will be appreciated!
