well, my (win XP) MUST be working (networked, the other computer, this one, is wired to the router, and router to modem, but the problem computer (the one in question) is wirlessly (via netGear wireless adadpter) connected to the router which this is connected to, and it IS getting iTunes radio, so it's obviously online, however when i try to look up a web page, i get the dreaded "page cannot be displayed" page. also, even though it IS gettting online to iTunes radio, it is NOT able to update spyware and antivirus software via web connection. I find this odd and strange. Can someone tell me what settings to go into to correct this? I want web access across the board; none of this nilly-nally ****. [unhappy]:eek:rolleyes:confused:( ....**also, obviously not as critical, but .....hehe, i wanted to make more smilies, but when i pressed the 'more' button, they came up in a different window. i tried cutting and pasting them, but they don't work like that....how do u put more smilies in this message, fro mthe 'more' section of smilites ??? (sorry, re: typing, i'm on my 2nd glass of wine, and i'm 36 - by this age we're all sick of typing, and its inherent errors, typos.)....hehe. anyway, ***HELP!!!***

:dood:guitar:wine ....Fred, my friend - bless you. that helped a lot. lovin' these cool hilarious smilies (and believe me, i'm not a big smiley person, at least not a very excitable one.....i'm used to the ones over at imdb now, and have frankly grown bored with 'em, but these are refreshing. imdb needs to update theirs!) anyway, cheers & many thanks. :wine :wave

PLEASE PLEASE!!! someone answer, and fast, please. this is BS, is just downloaded some BS from download.com called PC bug finder or some sh*t, just because no one is answering my inquiry here, and i just need to know what setting to change. well, DO NOT download it.....it scans your computer, and (even though download.com's editors rate it 4 out of 5, which is a CROCK, because they shouldn't be endorsing a sales-trap), it comes out with all these probs that your comp has, but uhhhh...guess what they want in order to fix it? yep, you guessed it: another sale first! BS!!!! what a load of crock. so they won't fix it (or them, i should say). so, PLEEEEASE help!

You do realize people on here help on their off time. Sometimes it may take a bit of time before the right person sees your thread. :wine

    Try pinging a website.

Open up command prompt(Start>Run>CMD) and type what is in the quotations, but not the quotations

    "ping google.com"

If you get no reply try this

    "ping 72.14.207.99"

Did you get a reply for either of those?

What is your OS? Also, what browser are you using? And have to tried more than one? What version of the browser(can be found by clicking Help>About *name of browser*)?

...cool thanks so much. it didn't work with "ping google.com" (I didn't use quotes of course), but it did work with 72.14.207.99 ....4 packets sent, 4 recvd, 0% packet loss. avg 95ms. winXP home, sp2; ie 6.0.2900. yes, i tried using firefox, and got same results.

Check for firewalls, security software or the connection configurations.
Do you have proxy set.If yes. Just clear the proxy info from the internet settings

Because of the fact that you can communicate with the web server using an IP address, but not with a domain name, it sounds like a DNS issue.

What I should have had you do, rather than ping, is put the IP address into your browsers address box.

Go to your web browser and instead of typing in www.google.com type in "72.14.207.99"

If I'm right, you'll get google.

Edit: Or I may be on the wrong track... Probably should have had you check the things that chaimjm suggested first, along with clearing temp internet files, history, cookies, etc.

....thanks both of you for your replies. to answer each of you: I tried putting that # in lieu of www.google.com into the browser, but alas :cry ....no dice. :p so, where do i find out my proxy settings? and, you do know (see the poster before chaimjn - i only remember his ranking - corporal; sorry, while i'm in here composing a new message, it's too late to go see his username without going thru too many steps, sorry poster...anyway, see his instructions) you DO know that i went and adjusted that DNS info in suggested settings area, right? so, if it's a DNS issue, why wouldn't that have solved it then? and where do i go for this proxy stuff you speak of, and what all do i check, uncheck, wipe clear, etc. please be detailed and specific. i'm a newbie at all this. thanks for your previous, and thanks in advance. and sorry corporal guy (or gal) who posted b4 chaimjn, that i forgot ur name b4 i composed here; i hate when that happens. but i DO appreciate ALL of you!!! many thanks and peace.):cool:wave

While it may be out of my league to determine your problem, I can at least tell you how to check those settings.

Open up IE and click Tools>Internet Options. In Internet Options click the Connections tab. Then click the LAN Settings button. Everything should be unchecked, unless you are actually using a proxy, but if you were, you should/would know about it.

Also, go to Start>Control Panel. Then double click on Network Connections. In that, right click on the network connection you are using(should say connected) and click Properties. Then, scrolling down if you need to, double click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). Everything (generally) should be set to Obtain Automatically. If not, then you should know, so if you don't have specific settings for this, then it should most likely be obtaining automatically.

For Firewall settings. Do you have any security software? Norton? McAfee? Of course, Windows does have a built in Firewall. You can try temporarily disabling it just to make sure it's not blocking your browser. Open the Control Panel again, and click Windows Firewall. Click in the Off bubble and click ok. Then check the internet again and see if it comes up.

    Hope this helps.

thanks, unbanable. please keep all these posts up. i start a new job tomorrow, and so i've put that project on hiatus for at least the next 5 days, so I probably won't be back online until Sunday at the earliest. So, can you keep this up untiil then, so that I can go back and refer to it in follow-up? Also, yes, I did consider the Norton thing. I despise Symantec/Norton, and AOL for that matter.....their bloatware makes it nearly impossible to completely rid these little pests out of one's system!!! ESPECIALLY true of Norton! Frankly, I've found it IS impossible to remove that program via Add/Remove Progs. They've got these little obstacles in place, and its like a catch-22 of conditional removal! Do you have any tips 'n tricks. CCleaner's own uninstaller didn't come thru in the way I would've like, on that particular dilemma. Know how I can rid myself of Evil Symantec (and any/all traces of it) once and for all ?:confused
