I followed the removal of WLCtrl32.dll thread exactlyand found quite a few things. I had a problem running combofix the first time so I double clicked on the icon - it seemed to run ok , but I'm not sure if it killed anything. I ran it again today - actually went through the entire procedure for all tools again and this is the log attached - I presume the original log was overwritten?
But the WLCtrl.dll is still in the startup list?
The computer I'm working on was absolutely stiff with malware ( belongs to a friend's daughter). So I'm hopefully on the last leg of the journey.
Any help you can give is much appreciated. Thanks. :)

We also need the log from running MGTools.exe --> C:\MGLogs.zip.

    Let's start with this:

If you haven't already, please disable the Guest account in User accounts.

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Open notepad and copy and paste the following text in the quote box into the window:
    Save this as fix.bat
Choose to save as all files.
Doubleclick fix.bat and let the program run.
A small black dos window will flash, this is normal.

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it. This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.

    * Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    * Do not change any check box options!!
    * Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:

    * Now click the Execute button.
    * Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    * Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    * Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    * A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

Also delete all files in the below folders except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp
    C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Local Settings\Temp

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Avenger.

Be sure to tell us how things are running.

Seeing it in what startup list? Your logs do not show it.

It's shown in the Spybot system startup list.

    Sorry....duh!.

Can you not remove it? Does it show if you go into msconfig? Is it in the CCleaner list?

It's not in msconfig nor in ccleaner. I thought that msconfig was not an exhaustive list of startups, though. I've deleted it in spybot before but it always came back! I'll try it again.

I turned off system restore, deleted the entry and rebooted - and it's back again. :(

    Let's try this.....Please download L2m9xfix here:
    http://swandog46.geekstogo.com/l2m9xfix.exe

Save it to the desktop and run it. Extract the files, and then open the l2m9xfix folder you just created and run RunThis.bat.

A window will open, and your desktop will disappear, then reappear. Please be patient until the batch says it is completed.

    Then please restart your computer.

If it still shows...go to Bitscan link: agree to the license and then select Scan. DO NOT CHANGE THE OPTIONS TO SHOW ALL FILES SCANNED. That will make your logs huge and we don't need to see clean files. Once Bitdefender completes the scan:

Click-on the Detected Problems tab. Then select Click here to export the scan report

When the window comes up to save the report, change the Save as type: box to Text (Tab Delimited) (*.txt) and then in the File name box enter change to bdscan then click save. This will save a file named bdscan.txt in whatever folder you are currently in when you save the file (take notice of where you are at so you can find it later). This bdcan.txt file will actually contain HTML code that we can easily view later while reviewing your log. All we have to do is rename the file to bdscan.html.

It says that RunThis.bat will only work on win98 or ME.

Arrrggg....... Please download Look2Me-Destroyer.exe to your desktop.
    • Close all windows before continuing.
    • Double-click Look2Me-Destroyer.exe to run it.
    • Put a check next to Run this program as a task.
    • You will receive a message saying Look2Me-Destroyer will close and re-open in approximately 1 minute. Click OK
    • When Look2Me-Destroyer re-opens, click the Scan for L2M button, your desktop icons will disappear, this is normal.
    • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove L2M button.
    • You will receive a Done Scanning message, click OK.
    • When completed, you will receive this message: Done removing infected files! Look2Me-Destroyer will now shutdown your computer, click OK.
    • Your computer will then shutdown.
    • Turn your computer back on.
    • Please post the contents of C:\Look2Me-Destroyer.txt
If Look2Me-Destroyer does not reopen automatically, reboot and try again.

If you receive a message from your firewall about this program accessing the internet please allow it.

If you receive a runtime error '339' please download MSWINSCK.OCX from the link below and place it in your C:\Windows\System32 Directory.

OK. I'll do that next. As it wasn't working I thought I'd do the bitdefender online scan - it's running at the moment. Actually I've just stopped it - it's scanning all files by default - estimated 120 hrs to finish!

Well I went into regedit and deleted WLCtrl.dll and wvutrqq.dll after turning off system restore. I also deleted them in the spybot startup list. I rebooted into safe mode and ran ccleaner (files) and easycleaner (registry) on both admin accounts and ran every utility I had on both accounts in safe mode. Rebooted and spybot startup list does not now have either entry. But windows updates will still not install - windows installer 3.1 has just failed. I have uninstalled combofix as shown in another thread on here. I installed Kaspersky, updated it and ran a full scan - it found nothing. Any ideas on the inability to install updates? Thanks for all your help so far - I've got a few people reading this, and learning. :)

Thanks. I was a bit wary of the disclaimer on that utility, I found this Microsoft page which explains the problem I had after repairing windows. I tried method 1 and it has worked. :)
