Ok so I took WMP 11 off a friend's computer by using LiteXP in order to put 10 on instead but 10 refuses to install. When I try to install it normally I get...

This version of Windows Media Technologies is incompatible with this version of Windows. For more information, view the information at the Microsoft web site.

I've even unzipped the 10 installer and tried to install it using wmsetsdk.exe which was the way I did it on my computer and it worked but it doesn't want to work on this computer. When I try to do it this way it says...

A more recent version of windows media player is already running on your computer.

How can I force 10 to install.

maybe you can delete WMP 11 first, and then install 10

Try installing it with your computer in Safe Mode.
It worked for me, using Win98se and WMP 9........I had God's own trouble getting the dratted thing to work, and finally this is what did it. Worth a shot.

Oh yeah..... first delete the version you already have...you won't lose any mpegs you have previously downloaded....they're stored as files in your hard drive.

Do try the Safe Mode installation though

WMPloc.dll is probably missing from the c:\windows\system32 folder.

Either replace it by expanding it from the windows xp CD or "servicepackfiles\i386" on the hard drive, or run an sfc /scannow from the run line.

Ok. I'll try that. Already tried the safe mode thing but nothing happened.
