XP Boot Stop 0x7B

I just installed XP Home. It is booting for the first time. P3 1GHz. GA6VXC7-4X-P MB. In safe mode, it stops at MUP.SYS and then Blue screen. Stop 0x7B (#,#,#,#). It's a brand new 80GB HD. It passed the NTFS format, etc.

I tested the HD, put it in a DELL and installed XP and it was able to boot fine. I read at microsoft support that it might be the VIA694X/686B chipset or the LBA mode in the CMOS BIOS.

There is a VIA-4-in-1 upgrade driver for XP. But it installs from within windows.

Any suggestions would be great. Thanks!

 

any RAID or PCI ATA controller in system?

On a new install 99.99999999999999999% of the time a stop 0x7b simply means that the Atapi controller could not be initialized. Thats why I ask about the controllers.

Drive overlays do this as well.

 

There is no RAID, but there is the ATA100 (not 133) controller. If the ATAPI controller could not be initialized what is the next step?

See if there are XP IDE drivers ont heir site. If so:

Get XP drivers for the controller, unzip them to a floppy. They should be in the proper format.

Boot to XP CD< press F6 load drivers, and then install XP.

 

I guess I' stuck betweek a rok and a hard place. On the site it says to fix the ATA100 problem, download the utility VIA-4-in-1, and install it. However, you need windows running to do that. There is an option in the BIOS setting to disable Enhanced ATAPI (which I think is ATA 100) and that didn't work either...
