I'm not exactly having the best experience with xp pro x64: yeah, it's pretty good, but some programs have problems running on it, especially apache.

The family computer downstairs runs xp home, which I always used until I got this one, amd64 3200+.

My question is this: am I legally allowed to put that copy of xp home on this computer, since I always used it with the family computer?

If not, would linux be the best bet? I _hate_ having to pay $200 for a new copy of xp, and rather learn how to use linux, but I would really like to be able to use xp home.

The copy can only be installed to one computer, so no, it wouldn't be legal.

No you would need a 2nd licence to install XP on your PC as well as have it on the other one, 1 licence per PC I'm afraid.

but with many linux versions having 64bit versions you may have some fun playing with those ;)

    Ubuntu and Kubuntu

you can also download a Live CD to test with as it runs off the CD opposed to the HD, slower but you can see if all hardware you have is recognised before a full install?

    Gentoo

to name a couple others can be searched out here http://www.linux.org/dist/list.html

The zipzoomfly requires buying hardware, and newegg and other retailers sell the upgrade version for $99 bux, meaning I'd need to get an old version of windows and then upgrade.

You would need an eligible CD for validation to use the upgrade.

You can pick up Windows 98SE or even 2000 for fairly cheap these days.

The required Hardware can be paperclips or $1 cable, something of that nature.

Here's can get XP home shipped Hardware is floppy cable $86.75 shipped:

OEM is fine the only differance between it an retail is fancy box & couple of free call's to microsoft for support.(my second link I think ya even get the box)
If ya need support ya got it here at MG (free)

The upgrade version's, you dont have to install a previous version, but you do need one on CD, you will be prompted during install to insert the previous version OS cd.
No files are copied no license key is needed, the Upgrade version of XP is only checking that you have a previous version of Windows, after checking the install simply continues.
So if you were to Buy an upgrade version, you can just borrow an eariler version OS cd from a friend

That's all well and good if the person lives "locally".

I'd love to see newegg shipping to Australia or New Zealand etc for that amount.

If I could still Edit, I would note the shipping is for the continental US of A

I'm unaware of the country from which Tonglebeak is from, many posters do not disclose this info.

For me, if I do not know, I would assume the USA, as I'm firmly planted in the middle of North America.

I wasn't having a dig at you ASUS, it's just that being on the other end of the world, we get treated like aliens by some manufacturers, which gets to me sometimes. ;)
