All I'm trying to do is install XP on a new (well, old) desktop....

To cut a long story short, I have loaded up a USB with a bootable version of XP. This allows me to start the desktop and enter XP setup but as soon as it gets to the 'Starting Windows' screen I get the Blue Screen of Death.

The error is 'Stop : 0x0000007B'. Can anyone suggest what could be causing it?

    Desktop spec:

    Dell Optiplex GX60
    512MB RAM
Western Digital WD400 (which will boot to the c: prompt only)
The BIOS settings are set to
    boot from USB first
only the hard disk in boot sequence
There is no CD/DVD installed (a major part of the headache, cos I can't get it working)

Anything else you need to know?

    Thanks
