Is there any way to remove Restore Points from Windows XP? Is there any way to even view the restore points that may have been created?

    Thanks.

In order to view restore points that are on there...you just go to "System Restore" under Start menu>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore, and then choose to restore to a previous date, then you will be able to view and select what restore point you want to use....and then you have to actually select a restore point and tell it to Restore to selected restore point!! To make a long story short...you get to review the available restore points before it actually initiates the system restore!!

To remove the restore points...you simply turn off system restore, by going to Control Panel>System>Sytem Restore, and there is an option there to turn off System Restore!! once you've done that...you want to restart the computer with the system restore turned off, and once it reboots that way, (ALL) of you restore points will be gone!! Then you can opt to turn it back on if you want, and when you reboot, it will make a new restore point and then take it from there!!

    Hope that helped!!

The quick way to remove all restore points without turning System Restore off: right click C:\ drive, go to properties then click on Disk Cleanup. From there click the second tab at the top and then click the part that says remove restore points. If you've done it once, you've done it a hundred times.... ;)

Thanks to everyone that responded - appreciate the assistance. Am working on a system with spyware installed and may have to remove the restore points at some point. MS says you can't remove them once they're created!

I was under the impression that if you turn OFF system restore, all the previous restore points are gone....at least on my system they are.

Be sure you want to do that..... MHO

You are totally correct in your impression mga, once system restore is turned of for a drive or all drives and your PC rebooted the restore points are deleted. ratler the MS hepldesk operative that you spoke to needs MSKB training on what the OS can and cannot do...... http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;[LN];310405

you can selectively remove restore point by date they were created by unhiding hidden system files and folders plus unhiding protected system files, this then shows you the Volume Information folder which houses the restore points... to access this folder you will need to take ownership of it by adding you user name to the users groups able to open this folder, once inside you can sort the Restore Points (RP) by date and keep only the ones you know are safe from virii/spyware.

If you have a PC with spyware I would advise you to have a read through the stickys in our Spyware section of the forum and if needed post a question there on how to remove as the guys and girls in that section are VERY good at removing nastys.

    Thanks Halo, excellent information.

I did read the stickys on spyware/virus/malware removal but suspect that it may be too late - the system in question is so infected that the actual removal time may be more costly than a re-install of the system. Important data has already been saved off and scanned for malware and the customer advised that a rebuild may be necessary. Client has installed lots of "downloadware" on the system and can't recall where it was procured and, in several cases, what it's used for! IMHO this makes it hard to determine when a "good" restore point existed. I've tried running Spybot Search and Destroy, Adaware, Spy Sweeper, McAfee AV, and AVG as well. Most of the adware is now gone but there is at least one trojan that keeps popping up (and doesn't seem to get removed) and I'm pretty certain something has attacked the McAfee subscription that's installed (since it's all disabled but customer insists they paid for all the services within the last 3 - 4 months). Know the system has ClkOptimizer on it (and all the above programs are unsuccessful in removing it) plus a homepage hijacker that also isn't successfully removed. System is attached via cable modem (already turned that particular piece of hardware off to work on this) so it's probably been easily hacked from whenever the original piece of malware got installed.

I recommend you got to the "Spyware Specific" forum!!! They are SCARY smart over there, and can help you fix your spyware/virus problems!!!!
