XP "this computer appears to have a non-standard or invalid master boot record"

    anyone know what this error when using fixmbr in the XP Pro repair console means? How to remedy. the alert is followed by a warning not to use fixmbr if the partitions on the disk are accessable because fix mbr may damage the partition table. problem is, i can't get xp pro to boot, and i've tried everything.
