New ATI Graphics card recommends SP2.. was crashing due to video so decided to go to SP2.

Windows update failed, said to run services.misc... tried but sys could not find, suspect it is a missing file.

Tried XP Repair with original CD, did receive 1 error - procedure entry point getiums could not be loaded in library msdart.dll.

Anyhow, same problem, cannot get updates and services.misc still missing.

Any advice would be appreciated, maybe time for a new install of XP, without the format of course.

It's services.msc, there is no I. Which is why it's missing, although I don't really see why it would tell you to run it unless you have turned off some services which are needed.

Correct, click Start, click Run, type services.msc, scroll down to Cryptographic Services, click Start, next double click the entry and set startup type to automatic. HTH

Thanks Coco and Bear... eyes are going... However, AU was already set to auto. Searched MS site for error 0X8DDD0018 and found the Background Intelligent Transfer Service was disabled. AU working now but still thinking about reloading XP.

    Thanks again
