xp viewer

    When I open a message in word or word pad it appears in a jumbled text that is unreadable?
    How do I convert these symbols to readable text.
    Is there a viewer built in to Adobe acrobat 6?

    I have downloaded the word viewer both 1997 and 2003 but I still get garbled images, small rectangles?
