Attached are logs. This client keeps getting viruses, and I clean up with malwarebytes and avira. After a day or two things start to pop back up again. I don't think I'm cleaning it effectively. Attached are logs. There are a couple of mbam and SAS logs since I ran them before following the removal guide. Also attached is an avira log.

FYI there is a file "DeltekAdvantage" that Avira is flagging as a virus. This is an old piece of software the client used to use. It's highly unlikely that it is a virus.

I noticed that rootkit reveal found some hidden files with randomly generated names, so I suspect there is still a virus.

I should also mention... the first time I ran combofix failed. It disconnected the internet, then stalled (for 12 hours). I wasn't able to close it, so restarted the computer and tried again. Combofix automatically installed a new version, and then ran successfully.

    Thanks in advance!

The cleaning process took care of most of your malware problems. We just have a little more to do.

Now let's flush the Java Cache
    • Click Start > Control Panel
    • Double click the Java icon (be patient, it may take a while to open)
    • Now click the General tab and under the Temporary Internet File area
    • Click the Settings button and then click the Delete Files... button.
    • In the next popup click OK.
If you have multiple Java plugin icons in Control Panel follow the above to clear all their caches.

Now uninstall the below old versions of software:
    Java(TM) 6 Update 20

Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it has expired or need to be updated to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Thanks!

Inbetween my original post and your reply, Avira continued to warn of viruses. I ran another scan today with Avira, and it removed a few things. The log is attached.

Also, a few days ago I removed Java Update 20 and installed Java Update 21. So I did not do it again, but I did clear the temporary files (again).

Over the last few days the PC has been fine, except for the occasional warning from Avira.

Aren't all the DeltekAdvantage80b.exe type files just things you put on your PC?

Yes, that's correct. They're just installers for the Deltek Advantage software. I copied them on there more than a year ago.

Then Avira is not finding anything of concern. Just false detections that you should add to the ignore list.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

I just want to confirm, because there were a couple things in the Avira log that did not look typical. Are the following all false positives?

    Code:
    C:\Documents and Settings\carol\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\8izjkk12.default\Cache\EEE27F71d01
        [DETECTION] Contains HEUR/HTML.Malware suspicious code
    C:\Qoobox\Quarantine\C\WINDOWS\system32\Drivers\redbook.sys.vir
        [DETECTION] Is the TR/Patched.Gen Trojan
    C:\System Volume Information\_restore{13B67526-172B-4BEB-BBB2-C76915925F2E}\RP1\A0001195.sys
        [DETECTION] Is the TR/Patched.Gen Trojan

    Thanks!

When you complete my in final instructions, the second two items will be gone. The redbook.sys.vir file is already quarantined and in the ComboFix backup folder ( QooBox). The 3rd item is in System Restore which is also not an issue since final instructions will be emptying System Restore. And the first item is a non issue in your FireFox cache. Avira either already removed it or you could simply empty the cache but it is not really a problem.
