xp won't install new hardware

Running XP service pack 3. Have completed most recent updates.

Had no issues until recently but cannot add any new hardware - mp3 player, phone, camera for example - all items that I've connected before without problems. These items will install on another pc though, with same cable, so I know it's my pc that's causing the problem.

Install wizard either gives no error code other than "cannot install" or Code 10. Tried MS help for code 10, didn't work.

USBs: I've checked device manager, no warning symbols but ran a driver update on them all just in case.

Tried installing new drivers for camera/ phone/ mp3 player just in case, but that doesn't work either. So I am now at a loss, and wondering if I should do a system restore if that will help.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

 

What type of computer is it? pre-built or did you built it. Laptop or desktop? If pre-built what brand and model.

Thanks for responding. I had it built for me last year at a local computer shop. It's a desktop.
Basic info (not sure what's needed, so from Everest)
Motherboard MSI with Intel Pentium Dual CPU E2180

 

So every USB device you connect you get error Code 10?

 

It's the hardware additions giving the errors. But, for example, when I did troubleshooting on the camera & mp3 player, both said to check the USBs in device manager. They appear fine, but the devices themselves give code 10.
