"Your computer is infected!" & Awola

Ran all the "READ & RUN ME FIRST" (Win XP) steps. Still have popups from yield sign in tray that say "Your computer is infected!" Also still have Awola Anti-spyware that either Spybot S&D or AVG had detected, and I thought, deleted.

Attached Combofix and MGTools logs. AVG had no report to save even though I had "Automatically generate report after every scan" checked and "Only if threats are found" unchecked. The only thing AVG found was 9 cookies.

    Thanks.

    Hi cee3,
I notice that you don't seem to have antivirus or a two-way firewall and that your operating system has not been updated to SP2. I would like to kindly caution you that this is inviting trouble. After we've cleaned up your computer, I will post a link to a page which offers free antivirus and firewalls which we recommend. They are effective and use very little resources. SP2 should only be installed after you've completely cleaned your computer and installed a clean restore point. Most people do not have a problem with SP2, but if your computer is one of the few that does, this allows you to easily go back to the last restore point.

1)You need to uninstall the below:

    - J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
    - J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
    - J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9
    - Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03
    - Java(TM) 6 Update 2
    - Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1

2)After uninstalling the above Reboot your computer!

    3) After rebooting, please install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

    4) Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

    5) Run HijackThis and select Do a system scan only. Select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [QdrModule10] "C:\Program Files\QdrModule\QdrModule10.exe"
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Microsft Windows Adapter 5.1.3013] C:\Documents and Settings\Robert Emery\Application Data\srgnufyu.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [QdrPack10] "C:\Program Files\QdrPack\QdrPack10.exe"
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Awola] "C:\Documents and Settings\Robert Emery\Application Data\Awola\Awola.exe" /MIN
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: nnnnmll - nnnnmll.dll (file missing)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

    6) Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Check the 'Input script manually' box.
    • Click on the magnifying glass icon.
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it in the box that opens:
    • Now click the 'Done' button.
    • Click on the traffic light icon and OK the prompt.
    • You will be prompted to restart, OK the prompt and your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt
    7) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. This program does not require an installation. The executable actually runs the program.

NOTE: This program is for Windows XP and Windows 2000 only. ATF Cleaner will remove all files from the items that are checked so if you have some cookies you'd like to save. Please move them to a different directory first.
    • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    • Under Main choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
    If you use Firefox browser
    • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
      • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
    If you use Opera browser
    • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
      • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main ATF Cleaner menu to close the program.

    8) Please post a fresh MGlogs.zip by running MGtools.exe (which is located directly under your root drive - usually C:\ ). You'll find the MGlogs.zip file in the MGTools folder under C. Let me know how things are running now?

    Thanks abri!

I'm helping a friend out with this machine. He did have an antivirus running. I uninstalled it and had not yet installed Avast before I started cleaning and gathering logs. It's running now.

The firewall was not turned on. It is now.

I checked the version of XP he was running and it appears to be SP2. I've attached a screenshot. I'll run Windows updated and see what it finds.

    I've attached MGTools.zip and Avenger.txt

Things appear to be running clean right now. No balloon popups or window popups and no Awola so far.

    Thanks again.

    Hi cee3
Everything looks good except this one file I missed. Please run Avenger again as per the instructions in post 3 using the contents of this box:
After it runs, please check the Avenger log (avenger.txt) to make sure the file has been deleted. If it's gone, then you can continue with our final clean-up instructions in the box below:
