A few days ago, the computer started to freeze when being used so I did a system restore back to a date in January. The scans were done after the system restore and are attached below. Looks like Roguekiller found something, please let me know how to remove it or what to do next.

    Thanks.

Looks like you are in pretty good shape. Just one minor tweak to do.

Please download OTM by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.
    • Run it by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, Win7, or Win8, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).
    • Copy the lines from the below codebox to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C
(or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy): Do not include the word Code: which is just a title line of
      the code box
    Code:
    :Processes
    explorer.exe

    :Files
    C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Templates\0t26jm1p08c034
    C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallKB52503$
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp\*.*
    C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\TEMP\*.*
    :Commands
    [purity]
    [EmptyTemp]
    [start explorer]
    [Reboot]
    • Return to OTM, right click in the Paste List of Files/Folders to Move window (under the yellow bar
      ) and choose Paste.
    • Now click the large [IMG] button.
    • If OTM asks to reboot your computer, allow it to do so. The report should appear in Notepad after the reboot.
    • Close OTM.
Now navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder ( assuming your Windows drive is C). This is where your log will be
saved in the form of Date and Time mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log. Just look for the most recent .log file. Attach
this log file to your next message.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles log
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Attached the requested logs, however, I ran Roguekiller again and for some reason the folder is still there:

    [ZeroAccess][FOLDER] $NtUninstallKB52503$ : C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallKB52503$ --> FOUND

I did reboot the computer when OTM asked. I navigated to the folder $NtUninstallKB52503 and it is empty from the inside.

Roguekiller found a few other things, not sure if they matter. Attaching the log for it as well.

The computer is running quite well, not noticing any cpu spikes or anything like that.

    Thanks.

Okay then just delete this folder.

Not problems other than the above folder which I just asked you to delete.

Great! Then on to the below.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware.
    2. Go back to step 4 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    3. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis. If you don't see it or it will not uninstall, don't worry about it. Just move on to the next step.
    4. If running Vista or Win 7, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click ( if running Vista, Win7, or Win 8 Right Click and Run As Administrator ) on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    6. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    7. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 6 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

No matter what I do, I cannot get $NtUninstallKB52503$ to delete. Following is what I tried which all failed:

    Unlocker
    Move on Boot
    Safe Mode
    rmdir (from command line)
    rd (from command line)
Fileassasin from malwarebytes (didn't work because it only deleted files and not folders).

    C:\WINDOWS>rmdir /S $NtUninstallKB52503$
    $NtUninstallKB52503$, Are you sure (Y/N)? Y
    The directory is not empty.

Its saying directory is not empty when trying to delete it and if I try to access it it says:

    C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallKB52503$ is not accessible.
The file can not be accessed by the system.

Is it safe to use the computer while trying to get this to delete? I did the rest of the steps you mentioned, except that I didn't flush the system restore points. I am not sure what step 8 is, looks like you left out the link?

    Thanks.

Yes it should be fine. This is just a left over folder from the infection. Let's try the below.

Be patient while doing the below. The fixes can sometimes take quite awhile to run. Especially the permissions repairs. It may be best to kick it off and goto bed or do something else. It is better not to run anything while the repairs are going on.
Download Windows Repair by Tweaking.com and unzip the contents into a newly created folder on your desktop.
    • Now run Repair_Windows.exe by double clicking on it ( if you are running Vista or Win 7, use right click and select Run As Administrator)
    • Now select the Start Repairs tab.
    • The click the Start button.
    • Create a System Restore point if prompted.
    • On the next screen, click the Unselect All button to first deselect all repairs.
    • Now select the following repair options:
      • Reset Registry Permissions
      • Reset File Permissions
      • Register System Files
      • Repair WMI
      • Remove Policies Set By Infections
      • Set Windows Services To Default Startup
    • Now on the lower right side check the box to Restart/Shutdown System When Finished
    • Then make sure the Restart System radio button is enabled.
    • Shutdown any other programs that you are running now before continuing.
    • Now click the Start button.
    • Be patient while the tool repairs the selected items.
    • It should reboot automatically when finished.
But reboot into safe boot mode and see if you can delete the folder.

Sorry, yes it got cut off. Here it is:

Still can't delete it, it says in one of the logs of Tweaking:

C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallKB52503$ - CreateFile Error : 1920 The file can not be accessed by the system.

Its really odd, since if I navigate to C:\Windows and search for the folder its not there. I tried windows search, and its not finding it either. But if I try with the command line, I get the errors such as not being able to access it. So, I downloaded 'Everything' to do a search, and it found the folder in C:\Windows. I do have the hidden files and folder option unchecked, not sure why windows search is not finding the folder but command line and Everything are.

Should I just leave this folder or will it cause problems?

    Thanks.

Let's see if anything else is hiding.

Now download and save a copy of combofix.exe and save it directly onto your Desktop folder.
    • Then double click on it to run it. Do not disturb it by clicking in the window that opens or it may stall.
    • After it finishes, it may reboot your PC. Attach the C:\combofix.txt log that it creates.
    • If after running Combofix you discover none of your programs will open up because you receive the following error:
      • Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion
    • Then you will need to reboot your computer which will normally fix this problem.

    Log attached.

Prior to running combofix, I had booted with a linux live cd (Ubuntu 12.10) and successfully deleted the $NtUninstallKB52503$ folder with it. I know I am not supposed to do anything until told to do so in the thread, but I thought in this case it was ok. Sorry if this was something wrong that I did.

I still haven't flushed out the restore points. I noticed that have a few folders here and there with a (2) next to them in the Program Files directory. I think they maybe
there because of the system restore that I did. Should I just leave them there? I also noticed that doing a system restore doesn't keep all the files intact...some files I had
downloaded on the C:\ root drive had disappeared but files in other places were left intact. What files does system restore deletes or does it move them in a folder somewhere?

    Thanks.

Well that explains why it is not in the Combofix log then. It would have been better not to have run Combofix though since you did things on your own first.

    Code:
    "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\"
    MALWAR~1 Mar 28 2013 "Malwarebytes(2)"

    "C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Desktop\"
    NEWFOL~1 Jul 8 2007 "New Folder"
    NEWFOL~2 Aug 3 2008 "New Folder (2)"
    siw(2).exe Jan 14 2010 1600000 "siw(2).exe"

    "C:\Program Files\"
    AVASTS~1 Mar 24 2013 "AVAST Software(2)"
    MALWAR~1 Mar 28 2013 "Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware(2)"
But this is not a malware problem to be discussed in this forum. ;)

System Restore is not a PC backup program. It is only a selective backup of certain files that Microsoft decides to save. Mostly from system folders. Using System Restore does not delete any files. It could however replace existing files by a copy that is in system restore.

It is time to remove combofix now:
    1. uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Press and hold the Windows key [IMG] and then press the letter R on your keyboard. This opens the Run dialog box.
      • Copy and paste the below into the Run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

Was able to uninstall combofix. I think I will just leave the (2) folders as is, there aren't too many of them. System restore seems to be a dangerous thing to use all of sudden since it may delete things...backing up before doing anything like this again is a bad idea. Definitely have to be more careful next time.

Thanks for all the help, the computer is running very good now. I will flush the restore points in a few days.
