I just read this, do you think its safe to do?
Increasing Band-Width By 20% Microsoft reserves 20% of your available bandwidth for their own purposes like Windows Updates and interrogating your PC etc To get it back: Click Start then Run and type “gpedit.msc” without quotes. This opens the group policy editor. Then go to: Local Computer Policy then Computer Configuration then Administrative Templates then Network then QOS Packet Scheduler and then to Limit Reservable Bandwidth. Double click on Limit Reservable bandwidth. It will say it is not configured, but the truth is under the ‘Explain’ tab i.e.”By default, the Packet Scheduler limits the system to 20 percent of the bandwidth of a connection, but you can use this setting to override the default.” So the trick is to ENABLE reservable bandwidth, then set it to ZERO. This will allow the system to reserve nothing, rather than the default 20%.It works on Win 2000 as well. |

Quote:
Windows Xp Home does not have gpedit.msc The path does exist in Windows media centre and Windows XP Pro. You have to be even more careful when messing with GPO (group policy objects) than messing with the registry - so not for the faint of heart. It is possible to totally lock yourself out of the pc with this tool. You may prefer some more reliable and safer tweaks in the registry. Increase the DNS cache. In regedit HKLM/system/currentcontrolset/services/dnscache/parameters rightclick select new>dword value create dword value cachehashtablebucketsize with a value of 1 create dword cachehashtablesize value 180 create dword maxchacheentrytt1limit with a value of ff00 create dword maxsoacacheentrytt1limit with a value of 12d close regedit and restart. Increase the maximum transmission unit size In regedit HKLM/system/currentcontrolset/services/tcpip/parameters/interfaces find the key corresponding to your network adapter it will be the one with IP and DCHP listed create dword or modify existing MTU with a value 576 for dialup or 1500 for broadband. close regedit and restart. Alter the Transmission Window settings In regedit HKLM/localmachine/currentcontrolset/services/Vxd/mstcp create/modify string value defaultrevwindow with a value of 4288 create/modify string value defaultTTL with a value of 128 close regedit and restart.

I tried this on WinXP pro (and home, I think). It seemed to an improvement in overall internet speed.

Most routers dont do the qos side that would be require for this non tweak to steal your bandwithd, sorry its not an effective tweak unless your router is able to do qos.
