I recently went through a massive cleanup on these forums(Thread Here)and although my system is clean now, I wanted to make sure I was well protected. I've read through the malware forums thread on 'avoiding malware' and followed the recommended instructions of what software to run.
I'm running Win XP SP3 and... Anti-Virus: avast! Antivirus Firewall: Online Armor Realtime Blocker: Comodo BOClean Non-realtime Blocker: Spyware Blaster Scanners: Super Anti-Spyware, Malware Bytes Anti-malware, and Spybot - Search & Destroy Misc: CCleaner, HijackThis(for any future mass infections/logging) I was running McAfee Security Suite, but I saw that it was coined as a resource hog, so I canned it in place of this forum's recommended software. I have some issues now, not with spyware, but with functionality. 1) Online Armor has an average of 8 permission windows per program I run(Annoying as hell!) 2) Without reading any long-winded tutorial, avast! is a foreign language to me. 3) What does BOCClean actually do? I'm confused about the excluder and how it actually protects me from spyware... 4) Are three scanners absolutely necessary? 4a) Spybot takes forever to scan, even with my temp folders clear. 4b) Malware Bytes is quick and easy to use, but is it worth anything without buying it? 4c) Super Anti-Spyware is basically a clone of Malware Bytes, but perhaps a little harder for me to understand. 5) Is there some all-inclusive program that is not a resource hog, doesn't annoy constantly, and gives high end protection? Basically, I suppose I'm new at safe-guarding a machine(never really had a machine worth guarding)and I am just looking for some information either from seasoned veterans to the spyware game, or noobs like me who know or have discovered, respectively, what mixture of software is ideal. |

I am not familiar with Online Armour but I hear it's quite confusing if you're a novice user. Are you using a paid for or shareware version?
Spybot search and destroy I personally wouldn't keep...... Hijackthis needs updating..so dont keep that copy you have for "future" troubles... Here's a good description of what BO Clean does http://www.comodo.com/boclean/boclean.html SuperAntiSpyware and Malware Bytes are good to keep even if they are not the paid versions..just keep them updated ![]() what confuses you about Avast? I use it so could help you with any questions you might have and if I am not able to..someone else will Spyware Blaster is worth keeping..again keep it updated Last edited by Doc13%; 09-10-08 at 18:56.. |
