Default Computer illiterate - need help badly

Okay, it seems the my Dell laptop no longer produces sound from the speakers. They do not work at all.

Apparently I am missing a driver, something called Microsoft HD Audio driver to make them work. It is the only answer I got. Geek Squad wants to charge me an arm and a leg to fix the problem, I'm a student and can't afford that, I just want my audio to work on my laptop again

I have a Dell Inspiron 6400 Built in December 2006, does anyone know what to do. Dell support wont do anything for free, I need to pay, so I am hoping i can get some help or recommendations here as to figure out what I need and where I can find it for free.

PLEASE! someone help, I will be forever thankful.

Cheers,

Studentoflife

Welcome to MajorGeeks! You said it is a laptop built in '06, so I am guessing WinXP? Have you gone to Dell's website and tried to find the driver for your onboard sound?

If that does not help, do you have any yellow exclamation marks in control panel-system-device manager?
