Some malware will make normal connection to the internet impossible by simply changing your Internet Connection settings to use a proxy server. If you are having problems connecting to the internet and perhaps getting messages about a web page not being available then check your settings and remove the Proxy Server setup if you don't need one, or change the Proxy Server back to the correct server and port settings if the malware has changed it to their own.

    For Internet Explorer (IE)

In IE, from the top menu click Tools and you will see the below (this is an example from IE11, other versions may look different):

Now click Internet Options as shown highlighted above and then click the Connetions tab and you will now see the below:

Now click the LAN settings button and you will see the below form:

If you don't use a Proxy Server, make sure that your form looks like the above and the Use a proxy server..... check box is not checked.

If you do use a Proxy Server, make sure the above check box is checked and then click the Advanced button and you will see the below form

Now enter the correct proxy addresses and ports for your network and then click OK. Then click OK two more times to back yourself out to the main browser window.

For additional information on configuring IE including various other versions of IE, see the below link from Microsoft:

How to configure Internet Explorer to use a proxy server

    For FireFox (FF)

In FF, from the top menu click Tools and then select Options which will open up a form like below.

In the left column, select the Advanced menu choice at the bottom and the form will change to be like below.

Now select the Network tab on the Avanced form and you will now see the below form

Select the Settings button to the right side and you will see the below Connection Settings form.

Now click the Settings... button and you will see the below:

If you don't use a Proxy Server, make sure that your form looks like the above and the No proxy radio button is selected as shown,

If you do use a Proxy Server, make sure the Manual proxy configuration radio button is selected and all of the correct proxy addresses and ports for your network are setup and then click OK. Then OK yourself back out to the main browser window.

    Google Chrome (GC)

Google Chrome actually uses the same connection and proxy settings as Internet Explorer/Windows. So you can either set them up with the Internet Explorer instructions or by using GC. Remember than whatever you change in Chrome will also affect IE.

In GC, click the Customize and control Google Chome icon ( the 3 parallel bars to the right of the URL Address bar.

You will then see a menu of choices :

Now choose the Settings option and a form like below will open:

Scroll down to the bottom of the Settings form and you will see a link named Show advanced settings... click this to allow the advance settings to also be shown on the Settings form. Scroll down some more and you will see an area for Network and a button named Change proxy settings.... which looks like below.

Click the Change proxy settings... button and then continue with the instructions given for Internet Explorer above where you click the LAN settings button.
