Default Overclocking my E6750

Hello, I'm new to overclocking so I need all the help I can get, and seeing as I've been able to solve all my computer problems thus far through this wonderful website I was wondering if get some help with this one. I'd like to overclock my E6750 and I had a couple of questions. First and foremost, What cooler should i use to overclock my E6750? Second, how do I overclock my E6750 (all I know is that it has something to do with my RAM's latency)? Thirdly, how far can I push it? I was hoping to get it around 3.4ghz (stock clocking is 2.66ghz.) I deeply appreciate any and all assistance given.

My Build:
E6750 (2.66ghz) Core 2 Duo (Stock Cooler as of the moment)
2gb of G.SKILL DDR2 RAM (Need to find out the timing of it)
512mb ATI Radeon Sapphire XT1950
MSI P6NGM
160gb 7200RPM Hardrive

A phase change cooler,or a water cooler Or the biggest chunk of Thermalright you can afford something like this;

It really depends on your setup and myriad of other factors, having quick research round it looks like your chip will do 3.4 without too much investment.

Read,Read,Read you need to under stand what you are doing and how each component interacts.

One more quick question. Are the coolers compatible with my Motherboard?

They are great HS Ricky has suggested.

I'm not going to "sugar coat this"!
OC has very little to do with RAM latency and if you cant afford to replace parts "DON'T DO IT" at least until you develop a great understanding of "how to do it".

Personally I hate MSI mobo's as they constantly bring out "locked" BIOS which means you have no options whatsoever within the BIOS to OC with even if you had a good understanding or had lot's of money an didn't care if you killed things.

You have a locked BIOS:

http://www.msi.com/index.php?func=pr...=170&cat3_no=2
I think your actual model is P6NGM2-FI:
http://www.msi.com/index.php?func=pr...=&prod_no=1595
The manual here indicates a locked BIOS.

The ones I posted are compatible with your 'socket' which is intel 775,is that what you meant?

You don't need to go and spend anything yet,try for a small modest overclock first with the stock cooler to get to grips with it,you need to learn how to monitor, stress test and benchmark first.

Small steps

Good call, completely missed the mobo spec.

Well unless you can come up with the model subscripts, e.g -L, -FD or -FIH, the one I looked at was locked.

Try (windows+r) and type dxdiag what is the "complete" model number in there?

Make sure you read a lot before even trying to OC if we find out the BIOS is unlocked. I have a Q6600 and it is @2.66GHz but even with a good understanding of OC I only have it at 3.0GHz (realistic). To take it to 3.4GHz is going to take an excellent understanding of the OC principles, constant monitoring and exceptional after market cooling but I would be expecting the CPU to die within 2-3 years of this level of activity because you are indicating a 40-50% OC.

If I have a locked bios then that means that I can't overclock unless I buy a new motherboard right? which I'm not particularly ecstatic about doing. Well damn.

Look there are some other ways (via software for certain PCs) but I don't want to suggest them until you can demonstrate a greater understanding of what your doing. It is the quickest way to permanently kill a PC.
