Laptop memory module access

I recently purchased an ASUS K53E laptop. it has 4 GB of memory. It has two memory slots. I want to add an additional 4 GB of memory. When I open the memory compartment, I can easily access the first memory slot (which has the 4 GB chip), I have been unable to figure out how to get at the second memory slot. I downloaded the ASUS user manual for this laptop, and it shows how to acess the first memory slot, but gives no hint as to how to access the second, unoccupied, memory slot. I have tried the ASUS forum, but I have received no response.

Hi dnaiva,

If there is only one slot in the memory compartment the other 4 Gigs is usually soldered onto the motherboard. MAYBE?

DDR3 1333 MHz SDRAM, 2 x SO-DIMM socket for expansion up to 8 GB SDRAM
so it appears that both slots are usable. When you remove the first stick of RAM, you will see the 2nd slot which is located under the first slot.
Since you have 4GB now, we can assume that the computer holds two 2GB sticks in each slot.
Remove the first stick, just to confirm the 2nd slot is under the first and the RAM can be removed from this slot too. Try it before you purchase your new RAM.

Hey dnaiva,
Have you figured out the issue yet? I have just bought the K53e from a friend and I decided to add a 4 GB ddr3 1333 pc3 10600 stick and when I opened the compartment, there was only one white plastic socket with the metal tabs that contained a 4 GB stick. Right above it is what seems to be another socket with only the metal tabs. It seems to me as if the other white plastic socket is missing. I attempted to install the new ram in the socket with only the metal tabs, but it will not keep the ram in place. I am currently, as we speak, searching for a resolution to this issue. Any help you may have is greatly appreciated.

This is not in English but the video should show you how to proceed. Start at 1:07 in this video and you can see the person remove 1 stick of RAM and install 2 sticks of RAM.

Thanks for that video, it proves that my K53E is missing the white plastic socket for the top ram chip. It is missing from my laptop. It was never installed by the manufacturer. I will head to the place of purchase to file a complaint. Others have had the same issue. Much appreciated for some video proof. Kudos.
