I'm worried that my computer is headed for big trouble because lately it's been acting strangely. For instance, I'd put it to sleep then come back and the light would show it was on but the monitor won't wake up. I'd then force a shut down by holding down the power button and then turn it back on.
Then today I came to computer and the monitor said something about not receiving a signal. Again I had to force a shut down. When I restarted, I got that plain screen with the message that Windows had a problem and that the computer had to shut down (I couldn't even read the message because it immediately shut down!). Scared me! I again pressed the power button and thank goodness it turned on this time. Any suggestions before this gets worse? This is an HP desktop, less than 3 years old. Thanks! |

We'll need the model number of your HP.
Look in your Device Manager (Start>Control Panel>Device Manager) If you are on Win7 or Vista. Do you see anything marked with an exclamation point? Likely, if there is, it will be in Display, Monitor or System Devices.

Thanks.
First, let's reset your Power Options to rule that out as a problem. Go to Start>Control Panel>Power Options and click on a Plan. Near the bottom, you will see Reset to Default. Do that with both plans. We won't know if there was some glitch there, until your PC takes another nap. That isn't a full model number I don't think, but it keeps coming back to this PC: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/d...roduct=4006023 Is this your computer? If not we'll need a number similar to this, p6213w. If it is your computer, install this driver: Original Intel Graphics Driver ► This may be more than driver problems. Could be as simple as a loose connection, between your PC and monitor or it could be serious, like a bad graphics chip. If it's fixable through a driver or setting, we'll get it, but if it is hardware, you may need to borrow and try a graphics card, to see if that solves your problem. But, try the first two things and we'll go from there.

Hi, I did the default setting thing in the Power settings. There were four plans: Recommended, Power Saver, Balanced, High Performance. I clicked "restore to default" on all.
Yes that's my model number. p6213w Sorry about that. I'll do the driver. Thanks! I'll let you know if any changes. |

I hope that is all you need. Sometimes it gets complicated.
