I'm showing my age here; however American Bandstand was my "go to" source to find the latest new music until MTV hit the air in the early '80s (and actually played nothing but music videos!).
I also confess I watched waaayyy too many episodes of ($10,000/$20,000) Pyramid when I was out of school on summer vacation or home sick.
