Default SOME pics are "X"d on SOME webpages

everything was running fine UNTIL I downloaded the Microsoft update KB2686509.It kept failing on download.I utilized all the suggestions on microsoft, inc Mr.Fixit.I downloaded some recommendations, namely net framework 2 thru 3.5.Still no success for the security download. After long search found that others are having same problem.Reason? Microsoft,in a tiny remark, said they had problem with the scripts in the security download and were working on it.Today I opened the computer, went online to my homepage, which has AVG toolbar. The AVG pic was missing.Went to other sites, saw that there were red X's on a lot of the pics.NOT all sites! photobucket was fine, dog sites were fine.Others, like paypal, sea shepherd, had some pics, but some pics on the site were also x'd out.I deleted everything from the July 13 downloads.Still no success.I updated AVG features. No luck.I have had this happen a long time ago,but when I rebooted, all was fine. Now,it is not.Used ALL the malware suggestions in forum.Nothing.Says I am running clean.
I have 11 yr old HP,SP3 on WinXP. Your kind help is appreciated,as always.
Chi Chi says Thank you also for help as Mom swears a lot.

I needed to add this: problem appeared to be a corrupted file in the AVG.I also did not have identity protection. It had been disabled and corrupted. The AVG csr walked me thru removal and everything up to fixed reboot.Seems all is now fine.BUT-I am still irked at Microsoft not mentioning that their important security update KB2686509 was not able to be downloaded. They should remove the files until they fix it.I might add they also had a bulletin on my problem. That did not work either.

any thoughts on my "issue" would be appreciated as I learn everytime from the MG!

there are piles of others on the microsoft board stating the same problem.Like myself, they did not see those fixes.Once I cleaned up the errors within AVG,I had no furthur problems.

THANK YOU! I read the entire article-went to the links and learned!

I really appreciate all of your knowledge and the professional kindness to share.Freeware at its' BEST.

PS Mom stopped swearing.4 paws up to the MG.
