Support tip: Installation of KB2720211 fails with Error 0x80004005: Unspecified error

Consider a scenario where you have encountered issues with the installation of KB2720211 (An update for Windows Server Update Services 3.0 Service Pack 2 is available) which forced you to remove and reinstall WSUS. Afterward, when reinstalling 2720211 it fails to install and in the MWusSetup.txt file you find the following:

Cause

This issue occurs because Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 do not support the .oxps format. The supported XPS document format in Windows 7 and in Windows Server 2008 R2 is .xps.


Resolution

To resolve this issue, use the following method:1.Install the OXPS to XPS converter tool by clicking the download link in this article.
2.Use the tool to convert the .oxps file to an .xps file.
3.Use XPS Viewer to open the .xps file.

Windows Update stops at 13 percent in Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:•You have a computer that is running Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012 with the Realtek Audio driver installed.
•You try to install the Windows 8 Client and Windows Server 2012 General Availability Cumulative Update from Windows Update on the computer.
•You click restart the computer when the installation is complete.
In this scenario, Windows Update stops at 13 percent during the "Configuring Windows Updates" step. After about 15 minutes, the system restarts automatically. Additionally, the updates is not installed and you receive the following error message:


Failure configuring Windows updates.

Windows 8 with Secure Boot enabled may no longer boot after installing new hardware

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

•You have a certified Windows 8 or Windows RT UEFI-based computer and Secure Boot has been enabled in the computer's BIOS.
•You make changes to the computer's hardware. Examples would include adding a new graphics, networking or storage controller adapter.

In this scenario, Windows may no longer boot after the changes are made. You may encounter behaviors such as hanging at a black screen, Windows crashing with a blue screen, or BIOS error messages to change your settings.



Cause

This behavior may occur when Secure Boot has been enabled in your computer's BIOS. Secure Boot protects the integrity of the operating system and prevents unauthorized firmware, operating systems or UEFI drivers from interfering with the boot process.

Resolution

To work around this issue, Secure Boot must first be disabled before installing new hardware. For more information on disabling Secure Boot in your computer's BIOS, reference the manual that came with your motherboard or contact your motherboard manufacturer. If you are in an enterprise environment, contact your system administrator.
