Howdy... this may sound like a stupid question, and if it is, I present you with my apologies.
The school I am employed by has recently purchased a new machine, an Athlon XP 3200+. Today, I finally got around to trying to install Windows XP Pro (with SP1) on it. It got through some of the install, but when it comes to the graphical part, it crashes out with a Machine_Check_Exception error. Windows 2000 won't install either, and I am not about to try Windows 98 / ME / NT or 2003 Server. My question is this: I have the feeling that the company we purchased from are trying to be smart, and not actually provide the computer they say they should be - but rather, a lower spec machine that's overclocked to speeds that are those of a 3200+. Without taking the computer apart, would there be any way to check this out? And could this even be causing such a problem? Hope someone can advice, Adam |

Good plan, in theory, but CPU-Z requires WIndows to be installed... and that's currently not happening, as WIndows crashes out during install. So whatever i use needs to be platform-independent.

Open the computer, go HERE and look up the modelnumber.
A 3200+ should be this: Quote:

yeah well, there's no other way of checking the CPU ID, so he'll have to take it apart, he can't install windows and as such he can't check the CPU ID from software

You might try a program called Quick Tech. It on a floppy disk and the computer boots up off this floppy disk and gives you an inventory of all the hardware of your system.
