network connection probs

im hoping someone can help me or atleast steer me in the right direction. my prob is a bit confusing but will do my best to explain:

in my network connections folder the only icon i have is for my isp, which at all times says im disconnected, which ofcourse im not since im able to connect and access the web etc. this is a prob for me tho becuz if im on a page and want to disconnect to make a phone call or such i have to completely restart my pc becuz there is no icon in my taskbar to enable me to do that.. i have checked and all the boxes are checked saying that it should be showing up but isnt.. i hope im making some sense and not just rambling. if anyone knows how i can fix this i would greatly appreciate the help.. my isp says its a pc prob, microsoft says its an isp prob.. im running windows xp sp1, dialup, any other needed info just let me know.. thanx in advance
