:confusedHi all, new here to the forum. Having some trouble with my computer. I purchased an E4300 yesterday from my university and booted it up and everything downloaded fine (or so I thought) and I was on the internet when I realized, there was no sound. I look into the task bar and there is no volume control. I go into Control Panel and Audio and it says there is no audio device. I have installed and uninstalled the Realtek driver it came with on the application and drivers cd. It wont give me sound. I have also tried different drivers such as Asus, the Realtek AC97 and it wont let me finish the installs. It gives error msgs like does not have microsoft license signature or something. I have tried a lot and I have had no luck. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks,

    Mark

:wave Welcome to Major Geeks :major
Install the chipset first http://support.gateway.com/support/...tware Installation UtilityVersion: 6.0.1.1002
If it's on-board sound, use this driver after rebooting http://support.gateway.com/support/... Definition Audio Driver Version: 5.10.0.5136
If you're using a sound card, some E4300s were sold with Creative sound cards, so try this driver if your PC has a Creative sound card http://support.gateway.com/support/...mor) Sound Card Drivers Revision: 5.12.4.442
You should probably check the device manager and make sure there's no other missing devices; look for yellow question marks ? or exclamation points ! and if you see these, post what they are here and we'll try to help.

NOTE: there is a registry patch for the Creative card that's needed for it to work correctly; download it from here http://support.gateway.com/support/...20048&dscr=Fix for Audigy 2 Driver Version: 1
These downloads are all for Windows XP only. You didn't mention which Windows you have so I assumed XP. As to the licensing issue: post the exact message and we'll try to help...

Good luck! Let us know how it goes!

I installed both of the audio drivers and neither of them produced sound. The Realtek said the onboard one is more up to date than the one that you linked to me so it did not complete its download. I tried the soundblaster and no dice. When I check Device Manager there is an exclamation point on Multimedia Audio Controller, it says the drivers for this device is not installed when I click on it. There is a question mark on the ethernet controller also. Thanks for your help.

We need to find out exactly what type of sound chip is installed. Download and run Everest and use the following steps to post the report as an attachment:
(above instructions originally posted by MG member musksnipe... thanks muskie!)

In the meantime, it's probably a real good idea to remove any partially installed sound drivers by looking through Add/Remove Programs and uninstalling any sound drivers listed there, and maybe looking through C:\Program Files and removing any Creative folders you find; if you find any RealTek folders there, looks through the contents of the folder(s) before deleting it to make sure it isn't something else....
... and here's the ethernet driver http://support.gateway.com/support/...t Ethernet Controller DriverVersion: 8.27.4.3
... if that driver doesn't work for the ethernet, then we will definitely need to have that Everest report ;)

Here is a newer chipset driver than the one above, this was released just 3 months ago; install it first then reboot:

According to the Everest report, you have an Intel D865GLC motherboard, and it uses an ADI sound driver, not RealTek like it says at the Gateway site (Gateway has the wrong drivers and wrong specs fairly regularly). So, after installing the new chipset driver, install this ADI sound driver:
    http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Det...&OSFullName=Windows* XP Home Edition&lang=eng
Hopefully this will give you some audio....
    Keep us posted!

Well this isnt going so well, when I tried to install the ADI SoundMax Driver it gave me an error message that said: "No Driver Found, reboot your system and run setup again". I did what it said twice and it gave me the error message both times. :(

Sorry, I didn't mean to leave you hangin..... I looked through the Everest report again, and it doesn't mention a sound card/audio adapter anywhere. It doesn't even list that one exists but couldn't be identified. This tells me that either the audio is disabled in the BIOS, has been disabled by an on-board jumper (this is common on older motherboards about 3-4 years old), or the sound chip is faulty. Check the BIOS and make sure the sound is enabled. You can also check Add/Remove Programs again and be sure anything audio driver related has been removed. Also, take a look in the device manager and post exactly what is listed under 'Sound, Video, and Game Controllers'. A screen shot might be quicker and easier....
