You must be careful to sites you visited , the right way protected your machine is this , you must unistall Bitdefender install

    http://majorgeeks.com/Avira_AntiVir_Personal_-_FREE_Antivirus_d955.html

even told us about your programmes which is installed in your machine , you could do this

    http://www.microsoft.com/atwork/maintenance/speed.aspx

improving your computer's performance , another thinking of me is that you should create this cd

as a default cd checking your machine one time a month for instance , it's very powerful tool !! :wave

The main reason you are constantly being infected is because you have not upgraded to SP3. Microsoft only provides security updates to SP3 and SP2 is full of security holes. I would zero out the drive with a bootable version of Active@killdisk then install XP and update to SP3 immediately or slipstream SP3 into your install disk first. Never run your computer without an antivirus. Set up your computer to download and install updates automatically.

Bitdefender is a good antivirus but is can slow down a old computer. Avast is also good and it uses less resources.

I would also create a Limited User Account and do all of your work in that.

Go to Chaslang’s How to Protect yourself from malware! http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=44525 and do everything he suggests.

I was hit with malware three times in 2009. After I set up my computers with Chaslang’s routine, I have not had a problem. Set up my sister’s laptop and mother-in-law’s desktop which is quite similar to yours. Plan to set up any computer I get in the future same way as quickly as possible.

I tend to like Avira and PCTools firewall, but feel free to try others on the list if they appeal to you more.

I also recommend you set up a limited user account and have just one administrator account. I do almost all my email reading, web surfing, etc in the limited account. I log into the administrator account every Patch Tuesday and get the Windows Updates. Weekly, I use the admin acct to update Spybot (updates every Wednesday), Malwarebytes, SUPERAntispyware and Spywareblaster. Also get any updates from Adobe Reader, Adobe Flash, Java, Firefox. So, I log in as admin only when I plan to be installing something, either updates or new software. The rest of the time, it’s the limited acct for me.

Also, since you say you’ve been hit with malware frequently, maybe you have never gotten it fully cleaned. You might want to go though the READ & RUN ME FIRST Malware Removal Guide http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407 and submit your logs in the malware forum so they can tell you if you are clean.

Then do the above How to Protect yourself from malware!
