i am ditchin' my aol dial up and going to cox cable modem. yeah no more snail's pace for me. i was wondering if someone had a good idea of the best most secure way to setup the hook up for the infinitely paranoid so we would all feel safe cozy and respectfully secure surfin' and when i'm not since the connection is basically 24/7. holla back.

After perusing your log in the malware section ...I don't doubt you're alittle paranoid ....once you are clean, recommend you have one anti-virsus:
    Avg:

    Use a safer browser:
    Firefox:

    Setup Zone Alarm:
    Zone Alarm Free: http://www.majorgeeks.com/ZoneAlarm_Free_d388.html
    Keep these two handy:
    CCleaner:

Anything beyond that (infinitely paranoid level) and you might as well keep dialup. Problem is at some point you lock down your pc to the point that you cant access some websites you want to. I constantly deal with this :)

If you want to use Internet Explorer (Firefox being safer is more of a myth, it has its fair share of security updates and simply lacks ActiveX, which you can disable, or simply ignore requested ActiveX install unless you know you need it) try Site Advisor:

they give you a choice to rent from them , buy from them or you can buy your own modem from another source. i just don't really know who has built crummy ones and who hasn't., etc. the best way to go is definetely to buy not rent.
