Setting up and installing RAID?

I know the different RAID levels 1 - 5 but when and how do you install and setup it up? I know what hardware that is needed but where do I get the software?

If you have a motherboard that includes on board RAID you should either already have the necessary software among the disks that came with your motherboard or be able to download it from either your motherboard company's website or from the company that makes the RAID chip on your motherboard.

If you're buying an a RAID controller card it should come with the necessary software to setup and maintain it. As far as how and when you set it up, the instructions should be included in your motherboard manual (if you have an on board RAID controller) or with the RAID controller card if you're adding one of those to implement RAID on your machine. Typically you'll have to install the drivers for the RAID card or chip (if you haven't previously done so, during an initial setup of your machine's motherboard for example) and turn on the RAID features in your BIOS/CMOS. Then you may also need to install additional software that will allow you to configure or make changes to the RAID array. In any case, the necessary instructions and software should come with your RAID hardware -- whether it's a RAID chip already embedded in your motherboard or an add on RAID card.
