What else can I disable?

I had to reformat my hard drive. When I went to reinstall my Norton Security program, everything but the anti-virus part installed. Weird... . I know I checked the box to install, it but thought I would uninstall and reinstall. It refused to uninstall, because it says the computer is using some Norton's files. It will also not reinstall because it says I have to uninstall first. ARGH! After going in this frustrating circle several times, (CTL-ALT-DEL did not shut it down) , I went online to look for a way to deal with it. One of the sites gave me a bunch of viruses.

I went to Trend Micro and had it scan, and it deleted all but 4 of them, which it say it cannot access. I turned off Restore. It still says it cannot access them to delete them. One of the viruses (a backdoor virus) in in my C:\Temp file, and the other one (a worm) in my C:\START UP file.

What else besides Restore do I need to disable, so I can get the viruses deleted? Thanks very much for any help!!

Wow, that computer was put together about 3 years ago, and I have not seen it apart in a looooong tome. If memory serves, it's running an AMD Duron, 600MH. I have Windows ME for my OS. It's my work computer, and I am home right now, so I can't check. I'm afraid to go back on line with it right now, with no virus protection on it.

The virus names were none that showed up on the virus lists at Norton or Trend Micro. Housecall found them, but does not give you their "nicknames" to work with. No matter what they are, the file locations shoud give some clue about how to get them out of there, like when one is in the \_Restore file. I just don't know what else I would have to disable or shut down.

    Woo Hoo!

Thanks, BillH! I *greatly* appreciate your help!

Avast found nothing, but Stinger took 12 (count 'em) Trojans and a worm off of my computer. (Geez, all from one session without virus protection....)

One last question, if anyone would be so kind - So that I can get my half-installed regular virus protection program back in correctly, how do I get out of that irratating loop of "can't uninstall, your computer is using files form this program" and "Can't reinstall, please uninstall first." I can't delete the files (it won't let me do that either - computer is using the files, so it says). I can't see it listed as running in CTL-Alt-Del. There is no icon in my toolbar, which there is when it is installed correctly. Argh! Can anyone tell me how to do this? Thanks very much!

Glad stinger worked for you. :) About your other problem . . . have you tried uninstalling it in "Safe Mode?" Also a lot of people on this site are high on your uninstaller for hard to uninstall applications. You might want to give it a look.

    Also you might want . . .

. . . to read this FAQ by Major Attitude about HiJack This (another nifty application :) )
    and follow the links there.

    Thanks again, BillH!

I will download the uninstaller program, for sure. Right now Windows ME is giving me shut-down problems (what a shocking surprise) , so it almost always starts up in safe mode. Has not made any difference. I read a great link on here to work on the shut down problems. Right now I was more worried about getting the viruses off of there.

I actually downloaded "HijackThis" this A.M. and tried it, but it came back with about 40 files, and I have no one to ask which ones to delete, so I let it go. Too many to list here and ask about.

I will try the special uninstall program tomorrow. Thanks for another great rescue!

I'll also download the HijackThis lists and see if I can make anything useful out of them. There is probably all kinds of scary junk in that system of mine.. I am guilty of not reformatting any more than I *absolutely* have to (as in when the system shuts down entirely and is no longer speaking to me in any language). My brother chews me out about that on a regular basis. :)

hey Dee :) Don't hesitate to cut and paste your HJiJack This list into this post. I'll take a look at it with you and if it gets too deep for me, we'll broadcast a Heeeeelllllp! to some of th other geeks who are expert in analyzing the stuff. ;)

    Thanks!

Thanks, BillH. :) I will do that when I am back at work. I spent all of yesterday down there getting a worm out of my system that was trashing it **terribly**. It seems to have arrived with a virus scanner program, oddly enough. Now I have it up and running enough to **finally** install my usual virus program (and threaten the life of my co-worker who disabled it so he could get to porn sites on *my* computer on his lunch hour, letting all of this stuff in...), so there should be no more problems. I hope...
