Hello - I went through the excellent Malware Removal guide but my problem is still persisting. This just started in the past 24 hours or so.

    Here are some symptoms:

    - when I try CTRL+ALT+DEL I get an error message 0xc000012d (no luck on searching that code for help)

    - The top header bar is often not displayed for an open window.

    - The system cannot run most programs, claiming to be out of memory (i.e. I could barely run most of the software recommended in the guide).

    - Active windows do not refresh properly, if at all.

I hope someone can help. I do have Trend Micro that is always running, so I'm not sure how this happened exactly. Thank you in advance.

    Well...its not a malware issue...
There are a few things you can do:

    Use add/remove programs to uninstall:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10"
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11"
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6"
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9
    Java(TM) 6 Update 2"
    Java(TM) 6 Update 3
    Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1

I would suggest that you post in software or hardware....you may have some faulty ram.

Wow, I actually already did what you suggest due to the guide...but when I went back to add/remove they were still there. Strange. So I'll try again.

Maybe faulty RAM makes sense since I had to uplug / unbattery this laptop to get it to shut down the other day. Is there a way to know?

    Update:

First, thank you for the help. Extremely appreciated.

I went back for those Java programs and found they were still present under add/remove hardware. Clicked on remove and it was now unable to locate them. I don't know the exact message something about invalid path...because of my second item below.

Taking your tip on a RAM error I found that I could run the Windows Memory Diagnostic test. Created the boot disc and ran the base test with everything passing, so I decided to go ahead and let it run the exented tests (in process).

One other symptom I forgot to mention is that I can only turn off the computer using Start-Shutdown sometimes. Other times I now have to unplug / unbattery.

Should I start a new thread in the hardware section?
