Hello again, Oh Great Malware Removal Masters!

I'm working with a friend's niece on her senior project. The first day working on it, she informed me that she can't type her paper or do college research since her family's computer was messed up and asked if I could take a look at it. AYE! IT IS BAD! Part of the problem is a younger sister who lives on Limewire and a mother who likes to get tipsy and play on the puter at wee hours of the morning. Both of them are likely to have clicked on anything that moved on the screen. :-D

So, at first no internet was working. I tried booting into safe mode several times with no success. Finally got it to reboot with the last known good config. and was able to get online, only to find that everything is being blocked or re-directed by their infection. AVG was also being blocked.

Updated Java, cleaned out some misc. programs, removed Limewire and all the BAD AV's like "Antivirus 2009", etc., to the best of my ability. After removing this stuff I'm seeing AVG running again (but I'm unable to update it due to the blocked internet connection).

Continued on with the XP cleaning procedure and surprisingly I was able to make it through most of it! Some notes:

    - Spybot wouldn't install - kept getting a network error during installation.
    - SAS was first run without updating (I manually updated it later and started to run it again but this time had to manually quit since I had to leave due to "family issues" that were going on in the room). First log will be attached.
-MBAM never made it through a scan. Kept getting the error "722 (0,7)" and eventually had to manually reboot since MBAM locked.
    - Combofix and MGtools both ran successfuly.

So here's the logs...again, MBAM wouldn't finish, so no MBAM log at this time.

Thanks in advance. Your advice and knowledge are greatly appreciated!!!

Please use add/remove programs to uninstall:
    Viewpoint Media Player

Do you know what these are.....if not delete them:
    C:\resycled
    C:\SARAHAV

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.

    * Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    * Do not change any check box options!!
    * Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:

    * Now click the Execute button.
    * Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    * Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    * Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    * A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

Also delete all files in the below folders except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp
    C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Local Settings\Temp

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Avenger.

    Hi Again TimW!
I will be getting back down there this afternoon to work on it as you've advised in your last post. Just wanted to clarify that "C:\SARAHAV" is a folder I created in the root folder - my name is Sarah and it is where I'm storing my AV programs, etc for this job. Is that OK?

I'll delete "C:\resycled" and sorry, I missed the Viewpoint player when I was cleaning the add/remove programs.

Thanks again! I'll be back with some logs for you later on! :cool

All of that is perfectly fine.....

I will see about turning on your PM privileges....so if you don't mind, I will remove the "private message" in your post. :)

I will be here when you have the new logs. :major

Hi Again Tim, first, thanks for turning on the PMs. I appreciate that a bunch and I apologize for the inadvertent "advertising" on the forum here. I just really think you deserve a thank you gift and wanted to make sure you got the message! Thanks for removing it.

Next, the results of the latest work:

    - Unistalled Viewpoint Media Player (however, I still see a related file still in the docs/settings folder that wouldn't delete, see below)
    - Couldn't find "C:\resycled" at that location. Did a search for it and it pulled it up in a folder that looked like some kind of quarantine or something. I deleted it there.
    - Ran Hijack and the ONLY file I found in your list to delete was "O20 - AppInit_DLLs: prrcaw.dll" - checked it and "fixed" it.
    - Did the fixME, was merged successfully.
    - Downloaded Avenger and ran the input script.
    - The only files in "C:\WINDOWS\Temp" were "hpqddsvc.log" and "Perflib_Perfdata_670.dat" - both were from today so would not delete.
    - Deleted several files in the "C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Local Settings\Temp" folder:
-"IadHide5.dll" wouldn't delete and WAS NOT from today.
-"MAR1.TMP" thru "MAR4.TMP", from today - not deleted.
    -"SSUPDATE.EXE" from today, not deleted.
-"vmpremov.exe" from today, wouldn't delete (this is still a Viewpoint association?)

The requested logs are attached. Thanks again Tim! ;)

P.S. Forgot to mention that I am working in the Mom's account, "Kathy". There is another account that is her younger daughter's (I believe it is called "Lexii") - I couldn't even get it to load on previous attempts and I want to delete it flat out. Should I attempt doing that yet?

Your logs are almost done. :)

Your friend could use another stick of ram if they want to speed it up a tad.

Run this: Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

Now use windows explorer to find and delete:
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Antivirus Scan.url
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Online Spyware Test.url

You can certainly delete that bad user account.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. This program does not require an installation. The executable actually runs the program.

NOTE: This program is for Windows XP and Windows 2000 only. ATF Cleaner will remove all files from the items that are checked so if you have some cookies you'd like to save. Please move them to a different directory first.

    * Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    * Under Main choose: Select All
    * Click the Empty Selected button.

    If you use Firefox browser

    * Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    * Click the Empty Selected button.
o NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

    If you use Opera browser

    * Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    * Click the Empty Selected button.
o NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main ATF Cleaner menu to close the program.

Now if you are not having any other malware issues, then:

Hi again Tim, sorry it took me so long to get back to you.

I removed Windows Messenger, deleted those two files, deleted the secondary user account, and ran ATF.

This is where I stopped since I'm not sure if I've got something floating around still on there - I'm unable to get online.

First, I'm confused as to how they've got this set-up - there's a Linksys PCI card in their desktop and the attached neighbor's apartment supposedly has a wireless router (Siemens?). The router the neighbor showed me didn't look wireless to me, but it is what worked before! So, tried using the Linksys connection monitor that was already on the puter and it will not recognize the connection. Then, through some stroke of luck I finally got things to connect using the Wireless Zero Config.

So, I am seeing that I am connected to the neighbor's wireless network, but I am unable to load anything in a browser. I even tried visiting a college website to see if it was being blocked or just not working - wouldn't go to the college website, so I'm assuming that it's no longer being blocked by viruses and it is something with the connection.

So, I've left all of the scanners installed and haven't done the restore point yet since I wanted to know if I should do any final scans or what advice you have on fixing this connection? (or should ask about this in another forum? I'm unsure if it's viruses or other problems at this point...). Please let me know if I can provide you with any other info about the problem at this point.

    Thanks Tim!

Thanks Tim, I read through these quick and these are referring to issues where the WCZ service is not working. As far as I can tell, it is working on this puter. Just can't get any pages to come up?

I'll run through this stuff and see what happens!

    Go to Start>run>regedit
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Ndisuio
Change the start value to 2(automatic).
    Reboot.

K, sorry about being so deliberate, but shall I try this first? then go to what you just suggested?

    Thanks! ;)

Yes....as the second link is exactly those instructions plus a little more in case that doesn't work.

Hi Tim, I'm sorry it took so long to get back to you!

It looks as if this puter is clean!! Yay!

I had some trouble with the internet connection thing at first because the neighbor's connection was OFF when I was trying to work on it so I had to go back the next day and all of the sudden the connection worked and next thing I know AVG was automatically updating, etc..

...still having some problems with the net connection - it connects and shows it is connected but I've had to use the "repair" function a few times to get it to show a webpage. I'm assuming this is just a network related problem and not related to the malware issues (tho they may have caused the error to begin with?)...sometimes it connects right up and others you have to repair...

So, I've updated everything for them and installed a firewall and I have an appointment to meet with the younger daughter to give her a little responsible internet usage crash course - already gave mom a talk about using the internet while "impaired" and letting her daughters' friends use the puter.

So, thank you a ton Tim, you've been a valuable blessing as usual! Check your PMs!

Thanks also to everyone at Major Geeks. You all rock...keep on doing what you do. It is wonderful!

EDIT: HMMMMM, it seems as though I am unable to PM again. Feel free to email me about that Tim (or PM if it is working, either way is fine)...

    Thought I had lost you....:)

Are you saying you connect via wifi to the neighbors router?

You may wish to post in either software or networking for your connection issues since we went thru the wifi issues.

Good to know everything else is fine...will PM you when I can. :)
