    My computer's cmd.exe boxes will flash in sets of three up on my screen and then disappear.

    It only happens every so often but it's kind of annoying when it happens because it removes me from the window or program I am on so that I have to make it active again.

    My computer's a Compaq Presario CQ60-421NR.
    I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit.

    I use Avast v.7.0.1426 on my computer.
    I was using MBAM but the database no longer updates for some reason and I haven't been able to fix it by uninstalling and reinstalling it. Or running mbamclean. Or attempting the solutions in this thread: http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407

    The error code I get when trying to update is PROGRAM_ERROR_UPDATING (0,0,Host not found). I have MBAM v.1.61.0.1400.

    I'd be extremely grateful if anyone could help.

    attached below are the log files as requested in your "read and run me first" thread.

    * Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
    If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    * Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    * If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    * Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:
    ClearJavaCache::
    KILLALL::
    RenV::
    c:\windows\System32\Event Agent\lsass .exe
    c:\windows\System32\Event Agent\Bin\services .exe
    c:\windows\System32\Event Agent\Bin\smss .exe
    c:\windows\System32\Event Agent\Bin\spoolsv .exe

    * Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    * At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    * You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    If it asks you to overide the previous file with the same name, click YES.
    * Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    [IMG]
    * Follow the prompts.
    * When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    * I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Note: If after running Combofix you discover none of your programs will open up, and you recieve the following error: "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion". Then the answer is to REBOOT the machine, and all will be corrected.

    Now attach the C:\MGLogs.zip file and the new ComboFix log.

    Here's the MGLogs file that I had done before I posted this thread. However it got slated for approval and so I was unable to post it.

    Tried to do your Combofix script and my computer bluescreened in the middle of it. Should I retry or?

    I am not finding much in the way of malware. But let's remove those files:

    Now download The Avenger by Swandog46 to your Desktop.

    See the download links under this icon [IMG]
    Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop.

    1. Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    2. Click OK at the warning to continue to use The Avenger
    3. Do not change any of the check box options!
    4. Shut down your protection software now to avoid possible conflicts.
    5. Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of The Avenger
    6. Now click the [IMG] button
    7. Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    8. Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when The Avenger finishes running.
    9. Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    10. A log file from The Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will pop-up for you to view when you login after reboot.
    11. Attach this log to your next message. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).Make sure that you watch for the license agreement for TrendMicro HijackThis and click on the Accept button TWICE to accept ( yes twice ).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\Avenger.txt
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

    Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    MBAM still gives me the same error: PROGRAM_ERROR_UPDATING (0,0,Host not found)
    And the cmd boxes are really random so I'm not sure but I haven't had any yet today so far so that's pretty good given I'll usually have had them pop up two or three times by now.

    You may need to post in the software forum for assistance with MBAM. Run the system for a while and let me know if all is good.

    Alright sounds good. Thanks for all your help for sure. I really appreciate it.

    I'll post here again in a day or two if I don't see any cmd boxes come up to let you know.

    Someone on another forum suggested uninstalling mbam and then running ccleaner to clean up the registry and then reinstalling. It worked like a charm! No more errors.

    still got the cmd.exe boxes though unfortunately.

    Did MBAM find anything once you reinstalled it?

    Nope it didn't but I ran Combofix again just to be on the safe side with the cmd boxes and i haven't had one pop up since early yesterday afternoon.

    Can you attach the log for me to see?

    Ran one just now just to keep on top of things that may've changed between the last scan and this one.
