Hi - hardware is a dell inspiron 1150 laptop running xp.
I can't get the pc to boot. Normal mode leads to the blue screen of death with the message
driver irql not less or equal
    tech info
    stop: 0x000000DL (0X0000000C, 0x00000002, 0X0000000D, 0XF8A119ED)
    ntio256.sys Address F8A119ED base at F8A0F000, Date Stamp 451060011
    beginning physical mempry dump...

I tried to boot in safe mode to run a virus scan but can't get the main screen up, just safe mode in the 4 corners and nothing else.

My kid has been on this computer, no clue where he visited on the web to pick up this mess.

Any suggestions on how to proceed?

    Thanks,
    Cal

Good question ...the ntio256.sys is a backdoor trojan. Try this first:
Let me know what you find.

Thanks for the help. Small issue, however -- I can't locate the OS CD for this system. Would one from another system work? If not, any other way to go about this?

You can borrow one as long as it is the same version: i.e. Home / Pro etc.

not good - the other one available is xp pro, the system with the trouble is xp home. do you know if I can download this from dell.com?
Any other way to do this?
    Thanks

In safe mode ...have you tried hitting Control+alt+delete? does the taskmanager come up?

And Dell may send you a replacement -> which will take time, it would be easier if you could find one to borrow.

just tried it, yes, task manager did come up. can I get rid of the trojan from here?

Sweet....when you get into the task manager, hit new task...then type in "regedit" without quotes and (hoping that it comes up) ...see if you can find:

    HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\ntio256
    HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_NTIO256

Anything like the above that has ntio256 in it and delete it.
Then see if you can reboot into normal mode.

yep, that worked and gave me the ability to boot to safe mode and normal mode. normal mode I'm being barraged by popups. I tried safe mode again to delete unwanted programs using control panel but when I hit start button there's no control panel selection. Any ideas here?
Also, I'm getting a pop up in safe mode - windows security alert - your computer is making unauthorized copies of your system.....click yes to download spyware remover. How can I get rid of this?

YOu need to do the instructions in the Read and RUn First ...particularly run ComboFix and then get us that log as well as the logs from running MGTools.exe.

Glad to hear you have the system back!

Please follow the instructions in the below link and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

Tim - first of all, thanks for all your help so far -- you guys are great!
I'm trying to follow your instructions exactly and in order. For Read and run me first, the first step is unstall mallware via add/remove programs. As I previously stated, I don't have a control panel option, so I can't access add/remove programs. What I do have is "set program asscess and defualts". When I click this, I get "this operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator."
In a previous thread started back in Oct by aceshye on a similar problem, you recommended running combofix and sending in a log. Should I follow these procedures?
    Thanks,
    Cal

Yes....for now just attach the logs from running ComboFix and also from running the MGTools.exe ( MGLogs.zip).

You are a mess....let's try to get the rest of it off:

Please use add/remove programs to uninstall:
Ad-Aware SE Personal ---> way out of date and no longer supported.
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 3
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it. This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.

    * Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    * Check the 'Input script manually' box.
    * Click on the magnifying glass icon.
    * Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it in the box that opens:

    * Now click the 'Done' button.
    * Click on the traffic light icon and OK the prompt.
    * You will be prompted to restart, OK the prompt and your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    * A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Avenger.

Be sure to tell us how things are running.

If you think this was a mess now, you should have seen it before when it wouldn't run. Once again, thanks for all your help. System seems to be running fine - no pop ups, programs I tried function fine ( I didn't try everything).
Log are attached - let me know if I need to do anything else.

Thanks again....without your help this system would have gone in the garbage.

    Congratulations ....Your logs look clean.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
    * Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix, you can delete the ComboFix.exe file, C:\ComboFix folder, C:\QooBox folder, C:\WINDOWS\nircmd.exe, C:\combofix.txt and C:\ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt logs that was created.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used SmitFraudFix, you can delete all files and folders related to it now including the c:\rapport.txt log.
    5. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    6. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    7. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    8. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    9. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    10. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
    * Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
    * Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    11. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
