    Hello.

Please help me with this problem, it would be much appreciated.

    Philips MMS 460 speaker system
    WinXP with Service Pack 2

I tried both, with my onboard c-media soundcard and a SB Live 24 Bit (should play up to 7.1 sound).

    Problem:

I only get stereo sound in winamp and games.
Speakers are wired correctly cause when I test them with the soundcard-software all 5 speakers and the subwoofer produce sound.
Creative Diagnose also shows everything as OK.
I have SB Live set as my standard output unit. It's activated in the hardware manager and no conflicts are shown. I use the drivers that went with the installation-CD with the soundcard. I'm totally at a dead end with my latin.

Thanks in advance and have a nice day,

    Wireflyer

I think that in order to get true surround sound, you need to access an audio stream that is carrying a signal for all teh channels. Winamp only outputs in stereo, and so do
most games. If you try DooM 3, you should get audio coming from all speakers.

    Hmm... thanks for the information.
But I wonder if that is the case that so few audio signals (like winamp or games) support more then stereo sound. If even 5.1 sound is so rarely supported what about 7.1???

Also, what puzzles me is the fact that with my older computer (win98, SB Live (older version), 4.1 speaker system) I ALWAYS heard sound from every speaker and the subwoofer be it in a game, winamp or even standard windows sound.
But maybe that wasn't true surround sound but only the one signal transfered to every speaker.

winamp and everything else WILL use all of your speakers.

are you using Creative Sound Mixer or Speaker Control to change your speaker settings? if so, do you have it linked to use the same settings in windows sound configuration?

try going into control panel>sounds and audio devices.

click Advanced on the bottom in speaker settings, ans make sure you are set to 5.1 surround sounds speakers.

I have just bought the 7.1 24bit Creative Soundblaster too...
There is a setting in EAX console 'cmss 3D' that allows jiggery pokery with your stereo settings - other than that I've had little joy... :(

I have set the speakers to 5.1 in all settings: Creative Surround Mixer (Software that came with the CD) and Windows sound-settings.
But only when I enabled the "cmss 3D" option in the EAX console I get sound from all speaker - thanks for that, Nitrowing!!! - ... except the subwoofer. That still doesn't work.
And its strange: when I try the sound test for the speakers in the Soundblaster speaker-settings I get sound from the subwoofer when testing noise. When testing voice I dont get sound from subwoofer, but maybe at last this is normal if a subwoofer isn't designed to give voice?

    BUT the problem now is:
The subwoofer still doesn't work in winamp or games, just with the speaker-test. :(

I'll have a fiddle tomorrow and see what's happenning on my system
